Silica gel (0.035–0.070 mm) was purchased from Acros Organics (Geel, Belgium) and used for column chromatography. Acetic acid and methanol were purchased from Qrec Chemical (Chonburi, Thailand). Lactobacillus was provided by the Department of Biological Science and Technology, China Medical University, Taichung, Taiwan.

Synthesis of Furan-Based Polyesters

Organic Synthesis of Enantiopure Compounds

Chemicals and reagents. Levoglucosenone was graciously provided by Circa group. Citronellol (Sigma Aldrich, Saint-Louis, MO, USA), diisobutylaluminum hydride (DIBAL-H) (Acros, Geel, Belgium), malonyl chloride 97% (Sigma Aldrich), succinyl chloride 95% (Sigma Aldrich), adipoyl chloride 98% (Sigma Aldrich), glutaryl chloride 97% (Sigma Aldrich), Lipopan® 50 BG (Novozymes, Bagsværd, Denmark) a purified lipase from Thermomyces lanuginosus expressed in Aspergillus oryzae, were used as received. NMR solvents, including CDCl3 and DMSO-d6, were purchased from Cambridge Isotopes Laboratories. HPLC grade solvents were purchased from Thermofisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA, and used as received. Ultra-pure laboratory-grade water was obtained from MilliQ, 18.2 megaOhms. TLC analyses were performed on an aluminum strip coated with Silica Gel 60 F254 from Merck, revealed under UV-light (254 nm), then in the presence of potassium permanganate staining solution. All manipulations with air-sensitive chemicals and reagents were performed using standard Schlenk techniques on a dual-manifold line, on a high-vacuum line.

Synthesis and Characterization of Functional Polymers

Trimethylolpropane allyl ether (98%), adipoyl chloride (98%), pyridine (99.5%), 3-mercaptopropionic acid (≥99%), thioglycolic acid (98%), 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (98%), 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenyl-acetophenone (99%), chloroform (≥99.8%), methanol (≥99.8%), dimethylformamide (≥99.8%), and Hellmanex III were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (Steinheim, Germany). Ethanol (≥99.8%) was obtained from Honeywell (Seetze, Germany) and toluene (≥99.8%) from Fisher Scientific (Loughborough, UK). Dichloromethane (analytical grade), n-hexane (96%), and diethyl ether (99.8%) were purchased from Scharlau (Sentmenat, Spain). Dichloromethane was dried over calcium hydride and distilled under a nitrogen atmosphere prior to use. All the other solvents and chemicals were used without further purification.
Trypsin/EDTA (0.25%), phosphate buffer saline (PBS), Amphotericin-B (fungizone), penicillin/streptomycin (P/S), were all purchased from Gibco ThermoFisher Scientific (Waltham, MA, USA), Roswell Park Memorial Institute 1640 medium (RPMI) with stable glutamine and fetal bovine serum (FBS) from PAN-Biotech (Aidenbach, Germany) and PrestoBlueTM reagent for cell viability from Invitrogen Life Technologies (Carlsbad, CA, USA). The L929 fibroblastic cell line was purchased from the German collection of microorganisms and cell cultures (DSMZ GmbH, Braunschweig, Germany).
