Peripheral blood was collected and plasma was isolated and stored at − 80 °C until assays were performed. Plasma was defrosted and centrifuged minutes before the assay. All samples were analyzed for IL-1α (Millipore Chemokine and Cytokine Assay, Millipore), MMP-3, and -7 were investigated with magnetic bead Luminex assays (R&D Systems). S100A9 (R&D Systems), MMP11, MMP25, MMP28 (mybiosource.com), and CTSK (Novus Biologicals) were measured by ELISA. Each sample was run in triplicate. The coefficient of variation (CV) was performed for triplicate wells and CV > 20% were removed.

All samples were analyzed for epidermal growth factor (EGF), interferon (IFN)-α2, IFNγ, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA), interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-3, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-10, IL-12p40, IL-12p70, IL-15, IL-13, IL-17A, IL-8, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α, MIP-1β, interferon gamma-induced protein (IP)-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, TNF-β, eotaxin, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) using a human cytokine 29-multiplex panel (Millipore Chemokine and Cytokine Assay, Millipore). The detection threshold ranged from 0.4 to 26.3 pg/mL over all the 29 bead assay targets. Cathepsin S (CTSS) and matrix metallopeptidase 12 (MMP-12) levels were quantified using a human multiplex bead assay (R&D Systems).
