Intravitreal injections into C57Bl/6J mice as previously described [50] . Briefly, mice were anesthetized under 1.5% isofluorane and injected under a dissecting microscope using a micropipette attached to a microsyringe (Drummond Scientific Co., Broomall, PA, USA). The glass pipette entered the superior nasal region of the sclera into the vitreous cavity approximately 0.5 mm from the limbus. Total volume injected was 1.5 μl over 30 s. Injections consisted of Sterile Balanced Saline solution (as a control) with or without 250 μM Benzoylbenzoyl-ATP (BzATP, #B6396, Sigma Aldrich). The lens was carefully checked before processing the retinae and any eyes showing signs of lens damage were excluded from the study. For qPCR measurements, gene expression differences between saline-injected and naïve retinae from litter-controlled mates were not significant.
