Corrosion Inhibition of AA 2024-T3 Alloy

Tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA, technical grade), cerium (III) chloride heptahydrate (CeCl3. 7H2O, 98%), and carbon disulphide (CS2, 99.9%) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea. Sodium chloride (NaCl, 99.5%) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH, 98%) were provided by Samchun Chemical Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea. Ethanol (EtOH), acetone, acetonitrile, and AA 2024-T3 alloy were purchased from local Korean companies. The chemical composition of the AA 2024-T3 alloy used was 0.45% Si, 0.45% Fe, 0.46% Mn, 1.2–1.8% Mg, and 3.8–4.9% Cu, with the remaining balance being Al.

Synthesis of Polymers via RAFT Polymerization

Maleic anhydride (MAnh) briquettes (99%, Sigma-Aldrich) and 2,2ʹ-azobis(2-butyronitrile) (AIBN) were purified via recrystallization from toluene and methanol respectively and were dried under vacuum overnight. 2,4,4-Trimethyl-1-pentene (diisobutylene, DIB) (99%, Sigma-Aldrich); 2-butanone (≥99%, Sigma-Aldrich), Na2CO3 (98%, Merck), 1,3,5-trioxane (≥99%, Sigma-Aldrich), 1-butanethiol (97%, Fluka), carbon disulphide (99%, Sigma-Aldrich), triethylamine (99%, Sigma-Aldrich), 1bromoethylbenzene (97%. Sigma-Aldrich), CDCl3 (99.9%, MagniSolv) and acetone-d6 (99.9%, MagniSolv) were used as received. Chloroform was distilled prior to use. The RAFT agent S-butyl-S'-(1-phenyl ethyl) trithiocarbonate (BPT) was synthesized as described in literature. 15

Synthesis of Functional Nanomaterials via RAFT Polymerization

Poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGA, average Mn = 480 g mol -1 ), n-butyl acrylate (n-BA, >99%) and t-butyl acrylate (t-BA 98%), Bromo-propionic acid (>99%), 1butanethiol (99%), carbon disulphide (>99%) and tannic acid (ACS reagent) were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich. All monomers above were passed through basic aluminium oxide to remove inhibitor before use. Chloroform-d3 (99.8% D atom), was obtained from Sigma Aldrich and used for 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Thermal initiator 4,4′-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) (ACVA, >98%, Aldrich), was used as received. Cyanine 7.5 amine was purchased from Lumiprobe. TEM grids were purchased from EM Resolutions Ltd (Sheffield, UK). RAFT agent, 2-(((butylthio)carbonothioyl)thio)propanoic acid (PABTC) was synthesised as previously described. 22
