Milli Q water was obtained using an IQ 7000 purifying system. P25
TiO2, HAuCl4·3H2O, PdCl2, acetone (99.9%, CH3COCH3), sodium
hydroxide (reagent grade, 97%, powder, NaOH), 1-phenylethanol (97%),
hexanoic acid (99%), pentane (99%), lauric acid (97%), palmitic acid
(99%), stearic acid (98%), oleic acid (97%), undecane (99%), pentadecane
(99%), heptadecane (99%), p-xylene (99.5%, as internal
GC standard), different solvents including dodecane (99%), PhMe (99%),
THF (99%), DMF (99%) and dichloroethane (99%) were purchased from
Sigma-Aldrich. Jatropha oil was purchased from the Shenyu company
in Yunnan Province, China. Wasted cooking oil and wasted hot-pot oil
were collected from Sichuan Province, China.

Synthesis and photocatalytic activity of ZnS-MnS

As precursors of Zn, S and Mn zinc nitrate hexahydrate (Zn(NO3)2٠6H2O) (>99%), thiourea (CH4N2S) (99%) and manganese acetate tetrahydrate (Mn(CH3COO)2٠4H2O) (>99%) used were from Sigma-Aldrich (Poznan, Poland). As solvents and, at the same time, stabilizers, we used two commonly applied amines, i.e. ethylenediamine (C2H8N2) (>99%, Sigma-Aldrich) and hydrazine monohydrate (N2H4) (98%, Sigma-Aldrich). For the photocatalytic tests, rhodamine B (RhB) (99%, Sigma-Aldrich, CAS no. 81-88-9) and P25 TiO2 (≥99.5%, Sigma-Aldrich) were utilized. All chemicals were used as received without further purification.

Absolute ethanol was purchased from Romical, Israel. PETG and PLA were ordered from 4project (Israel). VeroClear is produced by Stratasys. CF-343 silicon glue (Hercules) was purchased from a local shop.

Synthesis and Characterization of Engineered Nanoparticles

Experiments were performed with one magnetic and seven types of engineered NPs that were potentially relevant for in vivo exposure. ANATAZ TiO2 (Sigma-Aldrich 637254) and P25 TiO2 (Sigma-Aldrich 718467) NPs were obtained from Sigma (St Luis, MO, USA), DrA TiO2 (Dr. Adorable Inc, 712392053501) from Dr. Adorable Inc (Chicago, Illinois, USA), N.B. TiO2 (Naturally Balmy Ltd., NB-2257-1) from Naturally Balmy Ltd. (NB-2257-1, Bournemouth, UK), silver NPs (Biopure 20 nm) were obtained from nanoComposix (San Diego, CA, USA), and engineered SiO2 dispersed in 2-propanol were obtained from Nanotesla Institute Ljubljana (Ljubljana, Slovenia). Food-grade (FG) TiO2 NPs were obtained from Cake Stuff (Glasgow, UK). All TiO2 NP powders were temperature-sterilized, dispersed in ultrapure water, and sonicated.
Biomedical polyacrylic acid (PAA)-coated cobalt ferrite NPs were prepared as described previously [51 (link),105 (link)]. Briefly, cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4 and Co-ferrite) NPs cores were prepared using the coprecipitation method and stabilized in water. The NP-cores were coated in situ with a 45% (m/m) water solution of polyacrylic acid and sodium salt (PAA) with a molecular weight of 8 kDa (Sigma-Aldrich). The NPs were dialyzed against distilled water and sterilized via filtration using a 0.22 mm pore size syringe filter (Techno Plastic Products TPP, Trasadingen, Switzerland).
