Uranium Adsorption via Magnetic Nanoparticles

Poly(sodium 4‐styrenesulfonate) (PSS, average molecular weight ≈ 1 000 000 and ≈ 70 000) was purchased from Sigma‐Aldrich (USA). Polyethylenimine (PEI, branched, linear formula: (CH2CH2NH)n, average molecular weight ≈ 70 000, 50 wt% in H2O), a Fe3O4 nanoparticle suspension and UO2(NO3)2·6H2O were purchased from Shanghai Aladdin Biochemical Technology Co., Ltd (China). Ethanol (anhydrous, purity of 99.5%), HCl, Na2CO3, concentrated nitric acid and NaCl (purity of 99.5%) were obtained from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd (China). Deionized water was purified by a ULUP water purification system with a minimum resistivity of 18.25 mΩ cm−1 and used in all the processes. A stock solution of U(IV) (1000 mg L−1) was prepared by dissolving UO2(NO3)2·6H2O in concentrated nitric acid (2 mL) and deionized water (98 mL). The stock solution was then diluted to a desired concentration prior to the uranium adsorption experiment with the pH being adjusted by Na2CO3.

(Shanghai, China). Dialysis bags (molecular weight cut off = 14 000) were purchased from Shanghai Kayon Biological Technology Co., Ltd. Ultrapure water was used in all experiments.

Synthesis of BiPO4 Nanorods via Reflux

BiPO4 nanorods were prepared via the reflux method.21 In short, 1.956 g of Bi(NO3)3·5H2O (AR, Macklin) and 3.145 g of NaH2PO4·2H2O (AR, Macklin) were added into a flask, followed by mixing with at least 750 mL of deionized water. After the pH was adjusted to 2.2 with concentrated nitric acid (Sinopharm Chemical reagent Co., Ltd.), the flask was placed in an oil bath (120 °C) and mixing was conducted at 800 rpm, followed by heating for 48 hours. The resultant white precipitate was washed three times with deionized water and dried at 120 °C for 12 hours.

The 525 nm green light source was emitted by a homemade lamp with 5 W power. A 980 nm laser light source was a homemade laser emission, with a power of 5 W, through the homogeniser to expand the light spot. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra were obtained using a Cary Eclipse FL1011M003 (Varian) fluorescence spectrometer. The morphology of YAG-MSNs-RhD-6 was characterised using transmission electron microscopy (TEM, JEOL 2010F). X-ray diffraction (XRD, Cu Kα = 1.5418 Å radiation) was performed using a PANalytical X-Pert instrument.
