Synthesis of Aluminum Mesaconate

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
All reagents used have been supplied by Sigma Aldrich (St. Louis, MO, USA), in the highest purity available, and none have undergone a subsequent purification process.
The synthesis of the aluminum mesaconate was developed following the procedure described by Adrian Gutierrez-Serpa [33 (link)]. For this purpose, a mixture of mesaconic acid (99%) (4 mmol; 520 mg) and aluminum nitrate nonahydrate (98%) (4 mmol; 1500 mg) in 60 mL of deionized water (18.2 MΩ.cm Millipore® Milli-Q® water, Merck, Darmstadt, Germany) with urea (99%) (2 mmol to 10 mmol) was made with constant stirring for 20 min. Subsequently, the solution is transferred to a 100 mL Teflon autoclave lined with a stainless-steel jacket and placed in an oven in which treatment is carried out at 150 °C for 24 h. After 24 h, the autoclave is removed from the oven and cooled to room temperature. Then the white product obtained is separated by filtration and washed repeatedly with distilled water. Finally, it is dried at 50 °C.

Two IAEA reference
materials, IAEA-330 (spinach) and IAEA-372 (grass), originating from
Polessko, Kyiv, Ukraine, were used for verifying the measured 135Cs/137Cs ratio in our laboratory. The “Mixed
nuclide solution 7601” from Eckert & Ziegler Nuclitec GmbH
was applied for calibrating the counting efficiency of the specific
geometry in γ-ray spectrometry for 137Cs determination.
Merck Millipore Milli-Q water (18.2 MΩ·cm) and guaranteed
grade regents, including HNO3 (69%, Carl Roth), HCl (37%,
Carl Roth), and NH3 (20%, Carl Roth), were used to prepare
solutions, which were then utilized in sample digestion and radiochemical
analysis. Ammonium molybdophosphate powder [AMP, H12Mo12N3O40x H2O (x ≈ 3), ACS >95%] purchased
from
Alfa Aesar was used for the Cs extraction. To remove the potentially
interfering elements from the ashed samples, Dowex 1-X8 (100–200
mesh) anion exchange resin purchased from Alfa Aesar and the cation
exchange resin AG 50 W-X8 (100–200 mesh) from BioRad Laboratories,
Inc. were prepared for sample purification.

About PubCompare

Our mission is to provide scientists with the largest repository of trustworthy protocols and intelligent analytical tools, thereby offering them extensive information to design robust protocols aimed at minimizing the risk of failures.

We believe that the most crucial aspect is to grant scientists access to a wide range of reliable sources and new useful tools that surpass human capabilities.

However, we trust in allowing scientists to determine how to construct their own protocols based on this information, as they are the experts in their field.
