Synthesis and Characterization of Polymeric Flocculants

A cation monomer solution 74% in N,N,N -trimethyl-2-[(2-methyl-1-oxo-2-propenyl)oxy]-chloride (DMC) was purchased from Guangchuangjing Company (Shanghai, China) as an aqueous solution. Industrial monomer acrylamide (AM, 97%) was purchased from Lanjie Tap Water Company (Chongqing, China). Iso par L (Exxon), Span 80 (99%), and Tween 85 (99%) were purchased from Beijing Chemical Reagent Company (Beijing, China). 2,2′-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (V50, 99%), potassium persulphate (K2S2O8, 99%), and sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3, 90%) were purchased from Tokyo Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. Isopropanol (99%), iodine (99%), ethanol (99.9%), potassium iodide (99%), mercury chloride (99%,) sodium thiosulfate (99%), starch soluble (99%), silver nitrate (99%), and nonylphenol ethoxylate (NP-9) were supplied by Xilong Scientific Co., Ltd. (Guangdong, China).
Chemicals that have been used to treat wastewater, including poly aluminum chloride (PAC, 31%), were purchased from Hengyang Jianheng Industry Development Co., Ltd. (Hengyang, Hunan, China). Hydrochloric acid solution (HCl, 45%), sulfuric acid solution (H2SO4, 50%), and sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH, 32%) were purchased from Truong An Technology and Trading Co., Ltd. (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam). Calcium chloride (CaCl2, 99%) was purchased from Weifang Qingtong Chemical Co., Ltd. (Shandong, China).

Fetal bovine serum (FBS) was purchased from Excell Bio. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) were purchased from Dojindo Laboratories (Japan). The ultrapure water with a resistivity of 18.2 MΩ cm was obtained from Milli-Q Gradient System (Millipore, Bedford, MA, USA) and used for all of the experiments.

Curcumin-based Antimicrobial Nanoparticles

Antimicrobial Evaluation of PP Fabric

PP nonwoven fabric with a unit weight of 25 g/m2 and a thickness of 0.18 mm was kindly supplied by Jiyuan Kangan Sanitary Materials Company Limited (Jiyuan, China) and cut into plates with a size of 5 × 5 cm2. E. coli (ATCC 25922) bacterial strains were purchased from Zhangzhou Bochuang Corporation (Zhangzhou, China).

Antimicrobial Gelatin-PCL Hydrogel Dressings

Gelatin type A (extracted from porcine skin, 300 g Bloom) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) (Mn = 80,000) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (St Louis, MO, USA). Silver nitrate (AgNO3 ≥ 99%) and Acetone (AC, ≥99.5%) solutions were obtained from Xilong Chemical Co., Ltd. (Shantou, China). Mueller-Hinton (MH) was supplied by Hi-Media (Maharastra, India). Two strains of pathogens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 (P. aeruginosa) and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25,923 (S. aureus), were obtained from Marine Laboratory, International University-HCM Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The two commercial dressings chosen for this experiment are Aquacel® Ag (ConvaTec, Deeside, UK) (Aquacel) and UrgoTul® SSD (Urgo Medical, Paris, France) (UrgoTul). Histological staining chemicals including Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) and Masson’s Trichrome (MT) kits were also purchased from Sigma-Aldrich.
