Synthesis of Multi-Metal PBAs

The FF-PBAs were synthesized by a co-precipitation method at room temperature by the simultaneous dropwise addition of 100 mL of 0.1 M FeSO4, MnSO4, NiSO4, ZnSO4, CuSO4, CoSO4, FeCl3 (Sigma-Aldrich) and 100 mL of 0.01 M K2[Ni(CN)4] (Sigma-Aldrich) to 200 mL of H2O. Precipitates were formed immediately upon dropwise introduction of the solutions. The formed precipitates were separated and rinsed with deionized water several times to remove the impurity ions (such as K+). They were subsequently dried in a vacuum oven at 60 °C.

Preparation of Metal Ion Stock Solutions

Chemical reagents FeCl2, FeCl3, HNO3, NaOH, were of analytical grade and were purchased from Chemical Company (Romania). The metal sulphate salts (CuSO4, CoSO4 and ZnSO4) were purchased from Sigma Aldrich, and were used as received for the preparation of stock solutions of metal ions (10−2 mol/L) by dissolving the solid salts in distilled water. All working solutions of each metal ion were obtained by fresh dilution from the stock solution.

Western Blotting Reagent Protocol

Ammonium persulfate (APS), N,N,N’,N’-tetra methyl ethylenediamine (TEMED), bovine serum albumin and Bradford reagents were purchased from BioRad. Propan-2-ol, ethanol, sorbitol, HCl, MgCl2, MnCl2 and (NH4)2SO4 were from Prolabo. Glycerol was obtained from Acros organique.

Synthesis and Characterization of Perchlorate Salts

The perchlorate salts used for this study, viz., Mn(ClO4)·6H2O, Fe(ClO4)2·xH2O, Fe(ClO4)3·6H2O, Co(SO4)2·7H2O, Ni(ClO4)2·6H2O, Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O, Zn(ClO4)2·6H2O, NaClO4·H2O, KClO4, Ca(ClO4)2·4H2O, and Mg(ClO4)2·6H2O, were procured from Sigma-Aldrich

Me4NCl were procured from Otto Chemie Pvt. Ltd., and Bu4NBr, Bu4NI, Bu4NHSO4, Bu4NPO4, Me4NNO3, Bu4OAc, Bu4H2PO4, Na2CO3, NaHCO3, and Na2SO4 were
procured from Spectrochem Pvt. Ltd., India. All of the 20 naturally
occurring amino acids, except lysine (TCI Chemicals (India) Pvt. Ltd.)
and histidine (Avra Synthesis Pvt. Ltd., India), were procured from
Spectrochem Pvt. Ltd., India. All solution studies were carried out
in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) grade water. The
solvents used for recording NMR spectra were procured from Sigma-Aldrich
Chemical Company. 1H and 13C NMR spectra were
measured on a Bruker Ascend 400 spectrometer working at 400 MHz. The
mass spectra were recorded on a Bruker UltrafleXtreme MALDI-TOF mass
spectrometer. The absorption and steady-state fluorescence spectra
presented in this article were measured on a Varian Cary 100 Bio and
a Horiba Scientific FluoroMaz-4, respectively. The elemental analysis
was carried out using a PerkinElmer 2400 SeriesII CHNS.
