All other chemicals were used without further purification unless otherwise noted. 2-Bromo-6-methoxynaphthalene (1) (TCI), n-butyllithium (TCI), 1,2-dibromoethane (TCI), boron tribromide (TCI), trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride (TCI), ethynyltrimethylsilane (Aldrich), copper(I) iodide (Nacalai Tesque), sodium sulfide nonahydrate (Nacalai Tesque), 1,4-benzenedimethanol (TCI), acetic anhydride (Wako), iodine (Nacalai Tesque), orthoperiodic acid (Wako), sodium hydroxide (Nacalai Tesque), pyridinium chlorochromate (TCI), zinc chloride (TCI), trimethylsulfonium iodide (Aldrich), potassium hydroxide (Nacalai Tesque), and indium trichloride (TCI) were purchased and used as received. Moreover, 2,5-Diiodo-1,4-benzendicarboxaldehyde (2) [46 (link)] was prepared according to the synthetic procedure and exhibited the identical spectra reported in the literature.

Synthesis of Functionalized Bromoalkanes

Biotech Asia Pvt. Ltd. MDA-MB-231 a breast cancer cell line was procured
from National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), Pune.

General information: 1H NMR spectra were recorded on a Bruker Avance III600 instrument, in deuterated solvents and were referenced to TMS (6 scale). Flash chromatography was performed on Merck silica gel 60 (0.040-0.063 mm). Analytical thin layer chromatography (TLC) was carried out on precoated (0.25 mm) Merck silica gel F-254 plates. Mass spectra were recorded with a LTQ Orbitrap Discovery instrument, possessing an Ionmax ionization source. 3-Acetoxyindole, 5-bromoindole, 6-chloroindole, 5-cyanoindole, methyl indole-5-carboxylate, methyl indole-6-carboxylate, 5-methylindole, iodine, potassium iodide, thiophenol, oxalyl chloride, anhydrous aluminum chloride, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, anhydrous pyridine, triethylamine, 1,2-dibromoethane, piperazine and morpholine were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. Anhydrous dichloromethane and anhydrous N,N-dimethylformamide were purchased from Acros organics.

Polyvinylidene fluoride polymer (PVDF) (Solef® 1015, MW = 516,000) (Solvay, France); polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (MW=40,000) (Polysciences Inc., Warrington, PA, USA); Isopropanol (IPA, 99.9%), N, N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA > 99%) (Acros, New Jersey, NJ, USA). XPVDFSCO flat sheet microfiltration membranes (FS) with 0.40 μm pore size and 200 μm thickness (125 μm PVDF and 75 μm backing) (Nanostone, Oceanside, CA, USA). In all cases, HF and FS surface areas were based on the outer surface (10.9 cm2 on average) and the top surface area (17.3 cm2), respectively. All chemicals were of reagent grade and used as received.

Amine-modified MUC-1 aptamer with the sequence of (5′-NH2 (C6) GCAGTTGATCCTTTGGATACCCTGG-3′) [71 (link)] was purchased from Bioneer (Daejeon, Republic of Korea). All other media and cell culture components not listed were purchased from SPL life sciences (Geumgang, Republic of Korea) and Gibco (Paisley, UK).
