Commercially available multiarray kits were used to quantify plasma levels of interleukin 1β (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), C-reactive protein (CRP), soluable vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (sVCAM1), soluable intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (sICAM1), serum amyloid A (SAA), tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA), plasminogen, D-dimer, and von Willebrand factor (vWF) (Meso-Scale Diagnostics, Gaithersburg, MD). In addition, vasoconstrictor endothelin-1 (ET-1) and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) were measured using kits purchased from Bachem (Torrence, CA) and Mercodia (Winston Salem, NC), respectively. All assays were carried out according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
