Levels greater than 10 pg/mL were evaluated using another assay (Human IL-6 QuantiGlo ELISA Kit, catalog #Q6000B, R & D Systems) with greater dynamic range (0.5 – 1,500 pg/mL). To increase the sensitivity and specificity of the test and confirm the chronic nature of inflammation, assessment of IL-6 levels was performed in two different sessions. Blood tests were done 1–3 three weeks apart, with the first being required to be between 2.3 and 30 pg/mL and the average of the two measures required to be between 2.5 and 30 pg/mL.
