Lipids were analysed with the Beckman Coulter OSR61118 kit, total cholesterol with the OSR6216 kit, and HDL cholesterol with OSR6195 (Beckman Coulter, Brea, CA, USA) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Chromophore reactions yield a blue color complex, which can be measured bichromatically at 650 nm with OSR61118 and OSR6195 kits, and OSR6216 kit reactions yielded red quinoneimine dye, measured spectrophotometrically at 540/600 nm as an increase in absorbance, on an Infinite 200 plate reader (Tecan company, Hamburg, Germany); each kit had a coefficient of variation of up to 5%. LDL was estimated from measured parameters by the method described in Friedwald et al. [29 (link)] and Oršolić et al. [30 (link)].

Body weight was measured at the end of the special diet, before the mice were euthanized at the beginning of an experiment. Serum was obtained through a cardiac puncture after 24 h of starvation, centrifuged at 12,500 rpm at 4 °C, and frozen at −80 °C until measured. Total cholesterol (Beckman Coulter, OSR6116, Brea, CA, USA), triglycerides (Beckman Coulter, OSR60118), HDL (Beckman Coulter, OSR6195), and LDL (Beckman Coulter, OSR6196) were measured with an AU chemistry analyzer (Beckman Coulter, AU480) according to the protocol of the manufacturer.
