Heart rate were monitored by electrocardiography. For respiration rate, an MRI pressure pad/respiration transducer was used (TSD110, Biopac Systems, Goleta, CA), where the anesthetized animal was placed on top of the pad to record respiration. The pH, glucose levels, and blood gases were determined from a small sample (~90 μL) of arterial blood, collected from the cannulated right femoral artery, using the i-STAT CG8+ panel (03P88–25, Abbott, Princeton, NJ). For analysis of liver and kidney function ~500 μl of serum was collected from the heart and sent to Idexx Reference Laboratories (North Grafton, MA) for screening (test codes 60405 and 60406, respectively).
