Silica Sol Synthesis and Characterization

Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), concentrated sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide (30% AR), ethanol (99.7%), ammonia solution (25-28%), furfuryl alcohol (FA, 98.5%), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were obtained from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co.

After that, 0.2 ml ammonia solution was dripped into the mixture under continuous string. Then the stirring rate would be raised to 900 rpm. The final mixture is kept at 25 ºC for 24 h.

Synthesis of SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) Polymeric Nanoparticles

Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS, 28.5%), acrylamide (AM), N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBAAm), azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), acetonitrile, ethyl alcohol, and ammonia solution (25%) were purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd., Beijing, China, for the synthesis of SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticles. Calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, and sodium bicarbonate were purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd., Beijing, China, for the preparation of simulated formation water. All the chemical reagents were of analytical grade, and all the solutions used in this work were freshly prepared using deionized water. The experimental gas purchased from a local supplier (Zhejiang Hongtai Biotechnology Co., Ltd., Zhoushan, China) was nitrogen with a purity greater than 99.999%. The synthetic formation water was a brine with a total dissolved solids (TDS) value of 5260 ppm for all flow tests. The crude oil sample obtained from a Daqing oil reservoir had a density of 0.885 g/cm3 and a viscosity of 10.2 mPa s (60 °C) and was used to carry out the microscopic flooding experiment.

Synthesis of Manganese-Based Carbon Catalyst

PAA (M.W. = 1800) was provided by Aldrich. Manganese acetate tetrahydrate, ammonia solution (25%), ethanol (99.5%), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 30%), resorcinol and formaldehyde were purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Company. All chemical reagents are of analytical grade and used without further purification. Deionized water was used in all the experiments.
Typically, 0.5 mmol of the manganese salt and 120 mg PAA were dissolved in 20 mL deionized water, followed by addition of 0.2 mL ammonia solution and 8 mL ethanol to form a stable colloidal dispersion. Then 0.2 g resorcinol and 0.28 mL formaldehyde were added into the colloidal dispersion under vigorous stirring and the reaction time was prolonged for 10 h. The product was collected by centrifugation and then washed with deionized water several times. Finally, the sample was dried and carbonized at 500 °C for 2 h. Abbreviations of the sample names are shown in Table 1.

The ceria nanoparticles were synthesized as the previous studies (CeO2-1 [27 ] and CeO2-2 [43 ]).
