All rats were sacrificed by an intravenous injection of 0.6 ml of a 5:4 mixture containing ketamine (
Imalgene 1000, Bayer, Portugal) and xylazine (
Rompun, Bayer, Portugal). The vascular system was perfused with a saline solution followed by paraformaldehyde fixation. The heart was excised, sectioned transversely from the ventricular apex to the atria, and routinely processed for light microscopy. The midventricular fragment from each heart was selected for the study. Five-micrometer paraffin-embedded slices of the tissue samples were made and dyed according to Sirius red techniques. The histological images were acquired with an optical microscope using 100× magnification.
