CFR panels are commonly used as structural materials in the manufacturing
of aircraft and their components. The hemp fabric rugs were supplied
by MAEKO S.r.l. (Milan, Italy). Sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3, waterglass), APTES (>98%), hydrochloric acid

average Mw ∼ 9100 by gel permeation
chromatography (GPC), HDTMS (>85%), and PFOTES (98%) were purchased
from Sigma-Aldrich (Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany). A two-component
epoxy resin system (SX10), consisting of a modified diglycidyl ether
of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) resin and isophorone diamine (IDA), a cycloaliphatic
diamine hardener, purchased from MATES S.r.l. (Milan, Italy), was
used for the preparation of the polymer matrix in the composite coatings.
