Spirulina platensis powder was purchased from Qingdao Haixingyuan Biotechnology Co. Ltd. (Qingdao, China) The powder was washed thrice with distilled water to eliminate impurities and collected by centrifugation at 5000 rpm for 10 min. The washed powder was then dried overnight at 60 °C. The dried powder was pulverized and sieved using a standard sieve with a 200 mesh size. Sodium alginate (90%, SA) and calcium chloride (99%, CaCl2·2H2O) were obtained from Duksan Pure Chemicals (Ansan, Republic of Korea) and used to prepare alginate beads via Ca2+ crosslinking.
