All efforts were made to minimize the number of animals included. We used 79 male C57BL/6J mice weighing 20–30 g (Japan SLC, Shizuoka, Japan) and C57BL/6-Tg (UBC-GFP) 30Scha/J (green-fluorescent-protein-transgenic; GFP-Tg) mice (Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME, USA). Surgery was performed under anesthesia induced by an intraperitoneal injection of 0.3 mg/kg medetomidine (Meiji Seika Pharma, Tokyo, Japan), 4.0 mg/kg midazolam (Novartis, Basel, Switzerland), and 5.0 mg/kg butorphanol (Meiji Seika Pharma).
