Stomach tissue specimens with chronic ulcers (from acetic acid-induced rats) were sectioned and fixed in 10% buffered formalin. Then, tissue specimens were washed with water, immersed in 70% ethyl alcohol for 3–4 days, and embedded in paraffin. Finally, 5-μm thick paraffin sections were cut and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Periodic Acid–Schiff (PAS). Stained gastric tissue sections were examined under a light microscope and photographed using Leica camera, model EC3, attached to the microscope and connected to the Leica Application Suite software EZ (Leica, Wetzlar, Germany).

For the histopathologic analyses, gastric mucosa samples were preserved in 10% buffered formaldehyde. Right after, these were washed in buffer, dehydrated in increasing alcohol concentrations in series, and included in Historesin glycol methacrylate (Historesin, Leica, Wetzlar, Germany). The 4 μm sections were obtained in a microtome, model RM 2245 (Leica, Wetzlar, Germany) and subject to staining techniques by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). The slides in duplicate/animal were examined under a light microscope and photographed using Leica camera, model EC3, attached to the microscope and the Leica Application Suite software EZ (Leica, Wetzlar, Germany) used for histopathology [37 (link)].
