Sodium selenite (Na2SeO3, ≥99%) was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (St Louis, MO, USA) and diluted with distilled deionized water (ddH2O) to prepare a Na2SeO3 stock solution (2 mol/L) and filter-sterilized. Aliquots of Na2SeO3 from the filter-sterilized stock solution were added to the YEP growth media when needed. All other analytical grade reagents were purchased from Sangon Biotech (Shanghai, China) and Sinopharm Chemical Reagent (Shanghai, China).

Synthesis and Characterization of Selenium Nanoparticles

Selenium Speciation Analysis in Lactobacillus

Extraction and Analysis of Pinus densiflora Bark

Pinus densiflora bark was collected from 30-year-old Pinus densiflora Sieb. and Zucc. in Samcheok (Gangwon-do, Republic of Korea), sliced, and crushed into a fine powder. Then, extraction was performed using 60% EtOH in 50 °C for 3 h. The extraction step was repeated at least twice. After the filtrate was evaporated under low pressure, the extract was spray-dried. To remove the nonpolar materials, 3 h filtration with alcohol was performed at 30 °C. The filtrate was dried in 50 °C for 3 h to obtain the Pinus Densiflora bark powder. The content of taxifolin, procyanidin B1 and (+)-catechin were determined by HPLC, as described previously [17 ]. Curcumin (≥90%) was obtained from Carl Roth GmbH + Co. (Karlsruhe, Germany). Sodium selenite (Na2SeO3, ≥98%) was obtained from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, MO). All other chemicals and reagents used in the experiment were of analytical grade.

The following equipment were used for the research: FEI Nova NanoSEM 230 microscope (FEI Company, Hillsboro, Oregon, USA), x-ray powder diffractometer (XRD) (PANalytical, The Netherlands), energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDXRF) XDV-SD model (Helmut Fischer GmbH, Sindelfingen, Germany), energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDXRF) Epsilon 3 model (PANalytical, Almelo, The Netherlands), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) SpectroBlue FMS16a model (Spectro Analytical Instruments GmbH, Germany).
