Formulation and Characterization of Chlorhexidine Gel

Chlorhexidine digluconate solution (CHX, 20% in H2O) was obtained from Fagron (Saint Paul, MN, USA) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC, Methocel K100LV) was obtained from Colorcon (Harleysville, PA, USA). Chitosan (medium molecular weight; deacetylation degree of 75–85%), hemin, menadione, sodium chloride, sodium phosphate monobasic, sodium phosphate dibasic, magnesium sulfate and diethylamine were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (Sant Louis, MO, USA). Acetic acid and formic acid were obtained from Labsynth (Diadema, SP, Brazil), methanol was obtained from J.T. Baker (Phillipsburg, NJ, USA), potassium phosphate dibasic was purchased from Vetec (Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil), sucrose was purchased from Merck (Darmstadt, HE, Germany) and glucose was purchased from Fluka (St. Gallen, Switzerland). Tryptone, Brain Heart Infusion (BHI), Brain Heart Infusion agar (BHI-agar) and blood agar base were supplied from Oxoid (Basingstoke, Hampshire, UK). The yeast extract and the anaerobe container systems with the indicator were purchased from BD Diagnostics (Sparks, MD, USA). Microscopic glass slides (76 × 26 × 1.2 mm) were obtained from Knittelglaser (Varrentrappstr, Braunschweig, Germany). Ultrapure water from Milli-Q water system was used to prepare the aqueous solutions. All other chemicals used in this study were of analytical grade.

magnesium sulfate (≥97%), DMSO (99.7%), and toluene (≥99.5%)
were all purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. 2,5-DHB was purchased from
Bruker (Bruker Daltonik). Silica gel (ultra-pure, 40–60 μm,
60A) and sodium borohydride (NaBH4, 99%) were purchased from Acros
Organics. Heptane (≥99%), acetone (≥99%), methanol (≥99.8%),
ethanol (99.8%), and tetrahydrofuran (HPLC grade) were purchased from
VWR. Sodium chloride (reagent grade) was purchased from Scharlau.
Sulfuric acid (>95%, analytical grade), acetic anhydride (99.7%,
analytical
grade), and acetonitrile (≥99.8%, HPLC grade) were purchased
from Fischer Chemicals. All water used in the experiments refers to
Milli-Q water (Millipore, Q-POD, Millipak 0.22 μm filter, 18.2
MΩcm).

Thermoplasma acidophilum Lipid Extraction

Quantifying Chromium in Plants via ICP-MS

All chemicals were of analytical reagent grade. Deionized water (18.2 MΩ cm, Labconco, USA), LC-MS-grade methanol, and acetonitrile (MeCN) from Sigma (Milwaukee, USA) were used throughout.
The following Sigma-Aldrich reagents were used: potassium dichromate (Cr(VI)), formic acid, nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium hypochlorite. Stock standard solution of chromium (1000 mg/L) was from Sigma and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) internal standard mix was from Agilent Technologies.
Hoagland's nutrient solution containing calcium nitrate 0.35 mM, calcium chloride 2.1 mM, magnesium sulfate 0.91 mM, monobasic potassium phosphate 0.97 mM, potassium nitrate 1.22 mM, boric acid 23 μM, manganese chloride 3.9 μM, molybdenum trioxide 23 μM, ferric nitrate 10 μM, zinc nitrate 0.6 μM, and copper sulfate 0.44 μM, pH 5.8, was prepared from Sigma reagents [22 ].
Sunflower seeds (Helianthus annuus L.) were purchased at a local garden market as a product of Vita company, distributed in Mexico by Rancho de Molinos, S.A. de C.V.
