Serial 5 μm sections (cryo and paraffin) were cut and placed in duplicates on Superfrost Plus slides (Menzel, Braunschweig, Germany). Cryosections were air dried overnight and stored at −20°C. Every 10th slide of the confrontation co-cultures was routinely assessed using anti-HLA-G antibodies. For subsequent staining cryo-slides were thawed, air dried, fixed in acetone, air dried again for 5 min and rinsed in phosphate buffered saline (PBS). FFPE sections were deparaffinized in xylene and rehydrated through a series of graded alcohol. Heat induced antigen-retrieval was performed in antigen retrieval solution at pH 9 (Leica Biosystems, Nussloch, Germany) in a pressure cooker (Model DC2002, Biocare Medical, Concord, USA) for 7 min at 120°C before immunohistochemistry.
