Probabilistic Learning Experiment with Face and House Stimuli

MRI data were acquired on a Siemens 3T scanner at the University Medical Center Groningen. The probabilistic learning task was programmed using the Presentation® software package (Neurobehavioral Systems, Inc., Berkeley, CA, www.neurobs.com) and presented on an MRI-compatible IPS LCD monitor (BOLDscreen 24, Cambridge Research Systems, resolution 1920 × 1200) that was made visible to the participant through a mirror (viewing distance ~100 cm). Responses were made using two buttons positioned above each other on an MRI-compatible response box. The stimulus base set of 20 male face images and 20 house images (135 × 180 pixels) was identical to the one used by our group in van den Berg et al. (2019 (link)).

Multimodal Neuroimaging: MRI and Psychophysics

We used a Siemens Avanto 1.5 T MRI scanner with a 30-channel coil (a 32-channel coil customised to remove view obstructions) to acquire structural and functional MRI data. Stimuli were presented on an MR-compatible LCD display (BOLDscreen 24, Cambridge Research Systems Ltd; 51 × 32 cm; 1920 × 1200 pixels) viewed through a mirror in the scanner at 105 cm distance. Participants were lying supine in the scanner, with fixation stability recorded where possible via a mirror, with an Eyelink 1000 at the back of bore. Behavioural psychophysics was also performed in the scanner room, after scanning, under similar viewing circumstances as the functional MRI data collection. Hardware were controlled using custom MATLAB code (R2016b, MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA), via the Psychophysics Toolbox 3.20–22
