They were displayed on a calibrated 21-inch Sony Multiscan® G520 CRT monitor (resolution = 1600 x 1200 pixels, frame rate = 100 Hz, mean luminance = 40 cd/m2, CIE co-ordinates [x = 0.333, y = 0.377]) within a stationary circular envelope (diameter = 4° of visual angle) located 4° above a central fixation spot. Interval estimates were recorded via a calibrated Cedrus RB-530 response pad (Cedrus Corporation, San Pedro, CA).

Standardized Visual Stimulus Presentation

Stimuli were 64 × 64-pixel grayscale images presented at 8-bit resolution on a Sony Triniton Multiscan G520 CRT monitor in a dimly illuminated room. The stimulus images were initially constructed at 32 × 32-pixel resolution and were subsequently upsampled for display using bilinear interpolation. The monitor was carefully linearized using a Minolta LS-100 photometer. Maximum stimulus luminance was 106.9 cd/m2; minimum stimulus luminance was 1.39 cd/m2. The background was set to medium gray (54.1 cd/m2). At the viewing distance of 56 cm, the stimulus square subtended approximately 1 degree of visual angle. One pixel subtended approximately 0.031 degree of visual angle. Two different types of stimuli were used, arc segments embedded in naturalistic images and model-optimized stimuli to target different performance levels.
