Standard Formic acid (FA), mefenamic acid (MA), chloroamphenicol (CP), ketoprofen (KEP), clofibric acid (CA), indometacin (IDM), acetylsalicylic acid (ASP), bisphenol A (BPA), 2-phenylphenol, gemfibrozil (GEM), triclosan (TCS), and ibuprofen (IBU) (>98% of purity for all the chemicals) were purchased from J&K Scientific (Shanghai, China). Methanol (Tedia, USA) and acetonitrile (ACN) (Tedia, USA) were HPLC-grade. Divinylbenzene (DVB, 80%), benzoyl peroxide (BPO, 98%), toluene (TOL, 99.5%), oleic acid (OA), and 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE, 99%) were provided by Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd. (China). Ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3 • 6H2O), ferrous chloride tetrahydrate (FeCl2 • 4H2O), anhydrous ferric chloride (FeCl3), N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine, ammonium hydroxide, and other inorganic salts (analytical grade) were purchased from Nanjing Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd. (Nanjing, China). Ultrapure water prepared by the Milli-Q water purification system (Billerica, MA, USA) was used for all experiments.

Synthesis and Characterization of Octavinylsilsesquioxane

All chemical reagents used in the experiments were of analytical grade and were used directly without further purification unless otherwise specified. Aniline was purchased from Aladdin-Reagent Co. Ltd (Shanghai, China). 1,2-Dichloroethane (DCE), ammonium persulfate (APS), acetone, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, anhydrous aluminum chloride, potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7), sodium dithionite and 1,5-diphenylcarbazide were all purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co. Ltd (Shanghai, China). DCE was purified by atmospheric distillation and stored with 4 Å molecular sieves. Octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) was prepared according to a previous literature report.40

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Organic Dyes

N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF, AR), Triethylamine (Et3N, AR), 1,2-dichloroethane (AR), Tetrahydrofuran (THF, AR), Chloroform (AR), Methanol (AR), Acetone (AR), Calcium hydride (CaH2), Anhydrous aluminum chloride, 1,3-dinitrobenzene (1,3-DTB), p-nitroaniline (PNA), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), p-nitrotoluene (PNT), 4-nitrochlorobenzene (4-NCB), 4-nitrophthalic acid (4-NPA), p-nitrophenol (PNP) and o-nitrophenol (ONP) were purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd. (Shanghai, China). Rhodamine B (RB), Congo red (CR) and Methyl orange (MO) were purchased from Shanghai Macklin Biochemical Co., Ltd. (Shanghai, China). DMF was dried over CaH2 at 80 °C for 12 h and distilled under vacuum, then stored with 4 Å molecular sieves prior to use. Triethylamine (Et3N) and Chloroform were dried over CaH2 and used freshly. 1,2-dichloroethane was dried by distillation over calcium hydride under reflux prior to use.

Sulfuric acid (H2SO4, AR) and hydrochloric acid (HCl, AR) were purchased from Zhitang Chemical Company. Tetramethylammonium chloride (TMACl, ≥98%, TCI), lithium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate ethyl etherate (LiTPFB, Aldrich), potassium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)-borate (KTPBCl, ≥98%, Aldrich), bis(triphenylphosphoranylidene)-ammonium chloride (BTPPACl, ≥98%, Aldrich), bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)iron (DMFc, ≥97%, Aldrich), tetraphenylporphyrin (H2TPP, ≥98%, TCI), tetrathiafulvalene (TTF, ≥97%, Aldrich) were used as received without further purification. 1,2-Dichloroethane (DCE, ≥99%, Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co.) was washed with triply distilled water before use. Bis-(triphenylphosphoranylidene)-ammonium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl) borate (BTPPATPBCl) was synthesized by metathesis of equimolar solutions of BTPPACl and KTPBCl. The salts were recrystallized from acetone and then dried in an oven at 95 °C for 24 h. Tetramethylammonium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate (TMATPFB) was synthesized by the same method. All aqueous solutions were prepared from triply distilled water.

DVB and MA were passed through a strong base anion exchange resin column to remove the inhibitors prior to use.

RIPA lysis buffer and the PAGE Gel Kit were obtained from EpiZyme (Shanghai, China). Minocycline was purchased from Solarbio (Beijing, China). DL-Fluorocitric acid barium salt and melatonin were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, MO, USA).

Synthesis of Magnetic Multifunctional Resins

Divinylbenzene (DVB) (80 wt%), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) (97 wt%), CPX, and HA were obtained from J&K Chemical Co. Ltd. (China). Benzoperoxide, ferric chloride, ferric chloride hexahydrate, ferrous chloride tetrahydrate, acetone, aqueous ammonia (25 wt%), oleic acid, methanol, ethanol, toluene, gelatin, trisodium phosphate, disodium hydrogen phosphate, sodium hydroxide, sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid, and 1,2-dichloroethane were of analytical grade and purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co. Ltd. (China). Dimethylamine was produced by Shanghai Chemical Reagent Corp. (China). Five magnetic multifunctional resins designated as GMA10 to GMA90 were obtained through a sequence of polymerization, amination, and post-crosslinking reactions. Detailed procedures for the preparation of resins are described in the Supplementary Information.
