Two betamethasone valerate (BMV, Sigma-Aldrich, Gillingham, UK) formulations were prepared, exactly as previously described (8 (link)): (a) dissolved in medium chain triglycerides (MCT) (Mygliol 812 N, Synopharm, Barsbüttel, Germany), and (b) in the microemulsion Mikro 100® (ME) (Sebapharma, Boppard, Germany). The vehicles were thickened into semi-solid gels with 6% (w/w) Aerosil® 200 (Sigma-Aldrich). The BMV concentration in each of the two formulations was adjusted to 80% of the drug’s solubility (9.3 and 1.7 mg mL⁻¹ for ME and MCT, respectively), i.e., to provide equivalent thermodynamic activity (8 (link)).

Physicochemical Characterization of Diverse Silica Particles

Crystalline silica particles (DQ12; DMT GmbH and Co. KG, Essen, Germany), Vitreous silica (VS; a gift from Dr. Ghiazza, University of Torino, Italy), Aerosil 200 (Sigma-Aldrich, Bornem, Belgium) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT; MWNT-7, Mitsui, Tokyo, Japan) powders were sterilized by heating at 200°c for 2h immediately before suspension. Sterile Stöber particle suspension were synthesized based on Stöber process and its characterization was described elsewhere [81 (link)].
