Antioxidant Characterization of Phenolic Compounds

The chemical reagents ABTS ((2, 5, 7, Tween 40, and phenolic compound standards (gallic acid, catechin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, vanillin, quercetin, were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich (Saint Louis, Missouri, USA). methanol (HPLC grade) was obtained from J-TBacker (Alfragide, Lisbon, Portugal). In turn, the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent was obtained from Dinâmica (Indaiatuba, São Paulo, Brazil). Acetone, acetic acid, gallic acid, linoleic acid, methanol, and chloroform were obtained from Vetec (Saint Louis, Missouri, USA), while sulfuric acid was obtained from Merck (Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany). Ethanol, was obtained from Synth (Diadema, São Paulo, Brazil), while n-hexane and potassium persulfate were obtained from Neon (São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil). All reagents were analytical grade, and stock and buffer solutions were prepared using distilled water.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)-based Hydrogel Formulation

Poly(lactic acid) (Mw 200,000 g/mol) was a donation from Natureworks, Minnetonka, MN, USA. Dimethylsulfoxide, glutaraldehyde (aqueous solution 25% (v/v)), sodium chloride (Pro Analyses), dibasic sodium phosphate (P.A.) and chloroform were purchased from Vetec® Química Fina, Brazil. Potassium chloride (P.A.) was procured from Isofar, Brazil. Monobasic potassium phosphate (P.A.) was from Reagen, Brazil. Anforicin B (the amphotericin micellar system) was from Cristália (Itapira, São Paulo, Brazil), and amphotericin B drug powder (AmB) was purchased from Indofine Chemical Company, Inc. (Hillsborough, NJ, USA).

Cardiac Troponin T Immunosensor Development

Human cardiac troponin T (cTnT) antigen and mouse monoclonal anti-cTnT antibody were purchased from Calbiochem (Darmstadt, Germany). Pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid (COOH-Py) (99%), nanoclay (montmorillonite clay base material) surface modified with 0.5–5 wt.% aminopropyltriethoxysilane and 15–35 wt.% octadecylamine (NH2-NCY), potassium ferricyanide (K3[Fe(CN)6]), potassium ferrocyanide (K4[Fe(CN)6]), acetonitrile (anhydrous, 99.8%), glutaraldehyde (GA) (50%, w/w), N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS), N-ethyl-N’-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC), and glycine (Gly) were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, USA). Lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) and chloroform were purchased from Vetec (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solution (0.01 mol L−1, pH 7.4) was used in all experiments for dilution of the samples. Ultrapure water was obtained from a Millipore water purification system (18 MΩ cm−1, Milli-Q) from Millipore (St. Louis, Missouri, USA). All the chemical reagents used to prepare buffers and solutions were of analytical grade.

Phytochemical Standard Compounds Acquisition

Characterization of Polypropylene Contamination

In this work, polypropylene was used in pellet form (Prism 2400) supplied by Braskem S.A, Brazil. It presents a melt flow index (MFI) of 20 g/10 min (ASTM 1238, 230 °C, 2.16 kg) and a density of 0.902 g/cm3 (ASTM D 792). The chemicals used for contamination were chloroform (Vetec, 99.8%, CAS No. 67663), toluene (Vetec, 99.5%, CAS No. 108883), benzophenone (Acros Organics, 99%, CAS No. 119619), tetracosane (Merck, 99%, CAS No. 646311) and heptane (Synth, 99%, CAS No. 1422825). Ethanol (Merck, 99%) and acetic acid (Merck, 99%) were employed to prepare the food simulants, with 10% (v/v) ethanol and 3% (w/v) acetic acid respectively in MiliQ water.
