Perfluoropentane and perfluorohexane were purchased from Apollo Scientific Ltd (UK). De 1,2-Dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC; 16:0 PC), and (ω-methoxy- polyethyleneglycol₂₀₀₀)-N-carboxy-1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DSPE–PEG(2000)) were purchased from Avanti Polar Lipids (AL, USA) or Sigma Aldrich (MO, USA). Other materials were from Sigma-Aldrich and were of analytical grade. The standard buffers were sterile 20 mM HEPES, 5% (w/v) d-glucose corrected to pH 7.4.
