Ethyl propanoate (99% purity), 2,3-butanediol isomers (98%), ethyl 2-methylpropanoate (≥ 98%), ethyl 2-methylbutanoate (≥ 98%), n-propyl 2-methylpropanoate (≥ 97%), 4-heptanone (98%), 2-ethyl-1-hexanol (≥ 99.6%), diethyl succinate (99%), 2-bornanone (≥ 97%), methyl dodecanoate (≥ 98%), ethyl dodecanoate (≥ 98%), methyl tetradecanoate (≥ 98%), ethyl tetradecanoate (99%), ethyl (Z)-9-tetradecenoate (97%), ethyl hexadecanoate (≥ 99%), ethyl (Z)-9-octadecenoate (98%) and n-hexane (≥ 97%) were procured from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, MO, USA). Ethyl (Z)-9-hexadecenoate and ethyl (E)-9-octadecenoate, N-(2-methylbutyl)acetamide, N-(3-methylbutyl)acetamide, N-(2-methylbutyl)propanamide, N-(3-methylbutyl)propanamide, N-(2-methylbutyl)-2-methylpropanamide and N-(3-methylbutyl)-2-methylpropanamide, all at ≥ 98.0% purity (by GC), were synthesised previously [53 (link), 55 (link)].

Volatile Compound Extraction and Analysis

Furfural, ethyl isovalerate, hexanol, isoamyl acetate, γ-butyrolactone, benzaldehyde, hexanoic acid, ethyl hexanoate, limonene, ethyl 2-furoate, 1-octanol, 2-nonanone, 2-nonanol, 2-phenylethanol, diethyl succinate, ethyl octanoate, octanoic acid, β-cyclocitral, 2-phenylethyl acetate, nonanoic acid, ethyl nonanoate, decanoic acid, β-damascenone, ethyl decanoate, tetradecane, isoamyl octanoate, lilial, dodecanoic acid, ethyl dodecanoate, hexadecane, tetradecanoic acid, ethyl pentadecanoate, methyl pentadecanoate and ethyl hexadecanoate were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich-Fluka (St. Louis, Missouri, USA). Aliphatic hydrocarbons (retention index mixture for GC (KI) with purity above 95%) were also supplied by Sigma-Aldrich.
A 2 cm long Divinylbenzene/Carboxen/Polydimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS) fibre was supplied by Supelco (Bellefonte, PA, USA). Before extraction the fibre was conditioned according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Characterization of Organic Compounds

Dichloromethane (DCM; CAS: 75-09-2) of Chromasolv grade purity was obtained from Sigma Aldrich (Steinheim, Germany). PTFE 17 mm. 0.2 μm membrane filters were supplied from Sigma Aldrich (Steinheim, Germany). Styrene (≥96%), α-methyl Styrene (99%), acetophenone (≥98%), α,α-dimethyl benzene methanol (cumyl alcohol) (≥97%), ethyl linoleate (≥99%), ethyl hexadecanoate (≥99%), 2,4-di-tert butyl phenol (DTBP) (99%), methyl-9,12-octadecadienoate (≥98%), tetradecanamide (≥96%), and oleamide (≥99%) were also purchased from Sigma Aldrich (Steinheim, Germany). Hexadecanamide (95%) was purchased from TCI Chemicals (Tokyo, Japan). The PS oligomers 2,4,6-triphenyl-1-hexene and 1,3,5-triphenylcyclohexane (mixture of isomers) were purchased from FUJIFILM Wako Chemicals Europe GmbH (Milano, Italy).
