BC hydrogels were purchased from Hainan Yide Co. Ltd., China. Vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) (98%) was bought from Shanghai Macklin Biochemical Co. Ltd., China. Di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP, 98%), pyrrole (99%), tert-butanol (TBA, 99%), acetic acid (~ 95%), and ammonium persulphate (APS, 98%) were bought from Shanghai energy chemical Co. Ltd., China. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) (36.0 ~ 38.0%) and hexadecylcetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB, 99%) were bought from Sigma-Aldrich Co. Ltd., China. Metoprolol Removal from Wastewater

High ultrapure water, obtained from a Milli-Q water purification system, was used for preparing all the solutions. Metoprolol tartrate salt (98%), commercial nZVI (50 nm) and ferrous sulfate heptahydrate (>99%) were acquired from Aladdin (Shanghai, China). Sodium persulfate (PS), tert-butanol (TBA), ethanol (EtOH), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium sulfate anhydrous (Na2SO4), sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) were purchased from Shanghai Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd (China). The effluent of the secondary treatment was collected from one wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Shanghai, China. The major qualities of WWTP effluent were summarized in Table S1. The WWTP effluent were filtered through a 0.45 μm membrane filter with 48 h after sampling and stored at 4 °C until use.

Synthesis and Purification of Luminescent Materials

THF (99.9% for spectroscopy) was purchased from J&K Scientific Co., Ltd. Considering the photoluminescent measurements, SI and DBMI were recrystallized twice before use to ensure their purity. PMMA (10 g) was purified by dissolution in DCM (20 mL) and consequent precipitation in ethanol (200 mL) three times before use.
