Minimum essential medium α (MEM α) was obtained from Gibco BRL, Life Technologies (USA). 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) reagent, trypsin-EDTA, penicillin/streptomycin, p-nitrophenyl phosphate (pNPP) substrate, ascorbic acid, dexamethasone, βglycerol phosphate, and fetal bovine serum (FBS) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, MO, USA). Other chemicals and reagents were of analytical grade.
