Cytotoxicity Evaluation of Ampicillin

Ampicillin, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), trypan blue, cimetidine, and hydrotalcite were purchased from Sigma (Sigma-Aldrich Inc., MO, USA). Cell culture medium and reagents, such as RPMI 1640, fetal bovine serum (FBS), penicillin/streptomycin, and trypsin-EDTA were purchased from GIBCO (Invitrogen Inc., NY, USA). AnaeroPack Campylo, PGE2 assay kit was obtained from Mitsubishi Gas Cjemical Co., Inc. and R&D Systems, Inc. respectively. HCl, EtOH, and other solvents were purchased from Duksan pure Chemical Co. Ltd. (Kyunggi-do, Korea). All other reagents were the pharmaceutical or analytical grade. UV-spectrophotometric plate reader (ASYS UVM340), centrifuge 5810R (eppendorf), pH meter (IQ scientific instruments Inc), CO2 incubator (Forma scientific), inverted microscope (Olympus), liquid nitrogen dewars (CHART MVE) were used as laboratory equipments.

Synthesis of Silicon Oxycarbide Ceramic

To synthesize silicon oxycarbide, three polymeric precursors were chosen: a linear polymethylhydrosiloxane [PHMS, (CH3)3SiO{(CH3)HSiO}nSi(CH3)3, viscosity: 15–40 mPa.s (20 °C), CAS Number 63148-57-2, Sigma Aldrich, USA] for getting the basic structure of ceramic, vinyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane [PDMS,CH2CH{Si(CH)2O}nSi(CH3)2 CHCH2, viscosity:850–1150 mPa.s (25 °C), CAS Number 68083-19-2, Sigma Aldrich, USA] as a sacrificial pore former, cyclic 2,4,6,8-tetramethyl-2,4,6,8 tetravinlycyclotetrasiloxane [TMTVS, C12H28O4Si4, CAS Number 2554-06-05, Sigma Aldrich, USA) with SiC=C moieties] for increasing the crosslinking density. Hydrotalcite [LDH with formula {Mg6Al2(CO3) (OH)16·4H2O}, CAS Number 11097-59-9, Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO, USA], was used in the as-received condition for aligning the pores. Platinum (0)-1,3-divinyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane complex solution in xylene, Pt2%, [O{Si(CH3)2CH=CH2}2 Pt, Sigma Aldrich, USA] was used as the catalyst for the crosslinking reactions. Graphene (CAS NO.: 7782-42-5, United Nanotech Innovations Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, India) with the specific surface area (SSA) of 300 m2/g was taken for dispersing in the polymeric precursor mixture. All materials are used without further purification.

Preparation and Characterization of Modified Clays

PAL was purchased from Jiangsu, China. Kaolinite and vermiculite were purchased from Fujian, China. Illite and rectorite were purchased from Hubei, China. Mica was purchased from Hebei, China. Na+-MMT was purchased from Shandong, China. Ca2+-MMT and Li+-MMT was purchased from Henan, China. Halloysite, diatomite, hydrotalcite and sepiolite were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. Laponite RD was supplied by Southern Clay Products, Inc. For acid activation, the clays (15 g) were suspended in the 2 M HCl aqueous solutions (150 mL) at room temperature and magnetically stirred for 2 h. The acid activated clays were washed with deionized water until pH 6, and then dried at 105 °C to a constant weight. The clays were sifted using a 200 mesh sieve. Glass slides (24 × 50 mm) were purchased from Menzel, Germany. PFDTES (97%) and TEOS (99.9%) were bought from Gelest. Ethanol, ammonia, CH2I2, toluene n-dodecane, n-hexadecane and n-decane were bought from China National Medicines Co. Ltd.
