EEG and Video Monitoring of CD1 Male Mice

All mice were CD1 males purchased from Charles River. Mice were housed in an AAALAC-accredited facility under 12 h:12 h light/dark cycle, with food and water ad libitum. For EEG/video recording, animals were house individually in 12.5″ × 12.5″ × 15.5″ polycarbonate cages (AAA Plastic Products, Birmingham, AL, USA) with corncob bedding and nesting material. All experiments were conducted in accordance with the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and with the approval of the Virginia Tech Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC; #17-138). Animal work was conducted in accordance with ARRIVE guidelines.

Chronic Social Defeat Stress in Mice

C57bl6 male (n = 49) and female (n = 43) mice aged 7-8 weeks old and CD1 males aged 4-6 months old were obtained from Charles River Laboratories (USA). Mice were fed ad libitum at 22-25°C on a 12-hour light/dark cycle. CD-1 mice were singly housed except during social defeats. All other mice were housed in groups (4/cage) before and singly housed after social defeat episodes. In total, 35 males and 30 females were subjected to CSDS. Fourteen males and 13 females served as controls. All experimental procedures were approved by Université Laval's Institutional Animal Care Committee in respect with the Canadian Council on Animal Care guidelines.

CD1 Mouse Breeding and Housing

Eight weeks old female CD1 mice (Charles River, France) were collectively housed under a 12h light/12h dark cycle (lights on from 8 am to 8 pm) in a temperature-(22+/-3°C) and humidity-controlled facility.
Animals had ad libitum access to food and water. After 10 days of habituation to the housing conditions, females were mated with CD1 males (Charles River, France) following a 3 females/1 male breeding design.
Pregnancy was determined by the presence of a vaginal plug checked once a day at the beginning of the light phase. Each female was removed from the breeding couple and individually housed upon plug detection (gestational day GD 0). All procedures and experimental protocols were approved by the Animal Care Committee of Bordeaux (CEEA50) and were conducted in accordance with the European community's council directive of 24 November 1986 (86/609/ECC) that was in effect at the time of the experiments. All efforts were made to minimize animal suffering, and reduce the number of animals used.
