A standardized medical and physical examination was performed to obtain demographic, anthropometric, physiological, and gynecologic measures, familial history of diseases, and menstruation patterns as described previously [25 (link),34 (link)]. Weight and height were measured using a mechanical weight scale (model 160KL; Health-O-Meter Inc., Bridgeview, IL, USA) and a portable stadiometer (Seca 208; Vogel and Halke, Hamburg, Germany). Blood pressure was measured with a sphygmomanometer and a stethoscope (Littmann Master Classic, 3M Health Care, St. Paul, MN, USA).

To measure height, participants were required to stand on the height scale with bare feet and look straight. Centimeters were used as the unit of height, and the value was specified to only one decimal place. Body weight was measured in kg with a body composition analyzer (MC-980A, Tanita, Tokyo, Japan). Participants were required to wear light clothes and remove their shoes before measurement. Considering the weight of the clothes, 0.5 kg was subtracted from the obtained body weight and specified to only one decimal place. BMI (kg/m2) was calculated as body weight divided by height squared. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA, QDR Discovery Wi, Hologic, Tokyo, Japan) was performed by a clinical technician in a dedicated room, which was quiet and dark. Data regarding body fat, bone area, bone mineral density, lean mass, fat mass, bone mass, and body mass (the sum of the lean mass, fat mass, and bone mass) were obtained at baseline and after the intervention. Participants were required to fast for 10 h in preparation for DXA assessment, wear light clothes, remove their shoes, and lie in a supine position on the DXA machine for 7 min. Appendicular lean mass index (kg/m2) was calculated as the sum of lean mass in both arms and legs divided by the square of the height.
