Analytical grade chemicals nitrone spin trap phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN), tert-butylbenzene, (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO), and 1-λ1-oxidanyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidin-4-ol (TEMPOL) were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, MO, U.S.). Different types of activated charcoal (A = anasorb 747, B = CSC, and C = JXC (SKC Inc., Eighty Four, PA, U.S., material characteristics provided in Supporting Information Table S1)), Suprasil EPR tubes (4 mm o.d.; Wilmad-Labglass,Vineland, NJ, U.S.), Schlenk line (Chemglass Life Sciences, Vineland, NJ, U.S.), 500–750 μm glass beads (Fisher Scientific, PA, U.S.), and Cambridge filters pads (CFP, Performance Systematix Inc., Grand Rapids, MI, U.S.) were used as supplied. Cigarette holders (Hleeduo ZB-033) were purchased online from Amazon.

Cigarette Characterization and Analysis

The 3R4F research cigarette was obtained from the University of Kentucky (Lexington, Kentucky, USA). All the commercial cigarettes were purchased locally (Hershey, PA): 26 King size (85 mm) and Virginia Slims Gold (100 mm). The cigarette brand varieties were selected based on their market share or unique characteristics. Marlboro, Newport, Pall Mall and Camel were selected for their popularity, with variants of these brands comprising an estimated total US market share of 66%.31 Parliament and American Spirit exemplify the types of unique characteristics such as recessed filters and “additive free” formulation, respectively. The cigarettes were stored in their original packaging long term at −20°C in airtight plastic bags. Analytical grade chemicals: nitrone spin trap phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN), tert-butylbenzene, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO), 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPOL), heptadecane from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, MO, USA), Suprasil® EPR tubes (4mm o.d;Wilmad-Labglass,Vineland, NJ, USA), Schlenk line (Chemglass Life Sciences,Vineland, NJ, USA) and Cambridge filters pads (Performance Systematix Inc.,Grand Rapids, MI, USA) were used as supplied.

Polymer Fractionation and Crude Oil Analysis

Commercially available Torlon® 4000T-LV and Matrimid®5218 were purchased from Solvay Advanced Polymers (Alpharetta, GA) and Huntsman, respectively. SBAD-1, DUCKY-9, and DUCKY-10 polymers were synthesized from literature procedures detailed in two previous publications4 ,5 (link). Two real crude oils (Permian and Arabian light crude oils) were provided from ExxonMobil Technology and Engineering Company. The experimental results of the two fractionations were published previously4 ,5 (link). All other chemicals (p-xylylene diamine, lithium nitrate, chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, 1-methylpyrroldone, ethanol, methanol, hexane, toluene, toluene, Tert-butyl benzene, 1,3,5-triisopropyl benzene, n-Octane, iso-Octane, iso-cetane, methylcyclohexane, decalin, 1-methylnaphthalene, o-xylene, propyl benzene, mesitylene, n-butylcyclohexane, tetralin, bi-phenyl, dodecylbenzene, 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, 1,3,5-Tris[(3-methylphenyl) phenylamino]benzene), methanol, and guaiacol were purchased from Sigma Aldrich, Alfa Aesar, or TCI and used as received.

Preparation and Characterization of Mix-MA Monomer Benchmark

The blend “Mix-MA”, used as
a benchmark monomer, has been prepared with 33.3 wt % of (hydroxypropyl)methacrylate,
33.3 wt % of 1,4-butanediol dimethacrylate, and 33.3 wt % of a urethane
dimethacrylate monomer, obtained from Sigma Aldrich and represented
in Scheme 2. Mix-MA
was already used in previous works.3 (link),4 (link) More particularly,
its viscosity is well adapted for the preparation of formulations.
In addition, interestingly, Mix-MA is not too viscous. Therefore,
oxygen inhibition occurs, and only good-performance systems can polymerize
it. BlocBuilder-MA was obtained from Arkema. tert-Butylbenzene was obtained from Sigma-Aldrich.

Carbonyl Compound Quantification Protocol
