ZIF-8 Synthesis and Characterization

For the in situ growth of ZIF-8, the raw chemicals zinc nitrate hexahydrate (Zn(NO3)2·6H2O), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and 2-methylimidazole (2-mim) with purity over 99.0% were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. For the electrospinning (ES), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with an average molecular weight of 150 000 was chosen as polymer with a purity of 99.0%. The PAN was purchased from Parchem fine & specialty Co., Ltd N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) with purity of 99.0% was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. Besides, the solvent of methanol and ethanol with purity of 99.9% were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. The deionized water (D.I.W) was produced in the laboratory by an ultrapure system with a resistivity of 18.0 mΩ cm−1. All chemicals used in this work have not been further treated or purified. High purity gases of CO2 (99.99 mol%), CH4 (99.99 mol%), He (99.99 mol%) and N2 (99.99 mol%) (Foshan Huate Gas Co., Ltd, China) were used for gas adsorption experiments.

Antimicrobial Evaluation of Cellulose-based Composites

Deionized water was used as a solvent and all other reagents were of analytical grade.

Anti-rabbit IgG, HRP-conjugated antibody was purchased from Cell Signaling Technology. A549 cell line was obtained from American Type Culture Collection (ATCC).

Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks

PTMSP was obtained from ABCR. FeCl3 (97%) and Na2S2O8 was bought from Sigma-Aldrich. Cu foil (50 mm, 99.9%) was purchased from Strem. Toluene (AR) and methanol (AR) were obtained from Fischer. All the chemicals were used without further purifications. Si/SiO2 wafers were purchased from University Wafer. Si/SiO2 wafer with single-layer graphene was bought from Ted Pella. HOPG (ZYA quality, GRAS/1.0 × 7.0 × 7.0) was purchased from ScanSens. Silicon nitride TEM supports (50 nm silicon nitride film on a 200 μm silicon frame with nine viewing windows, each 0.1 × 0.1 mm2) were purchased from Ted Pella. Sapphire (Al2O3) wafer (Z cut, 10 cm × 0.5 mm) was purchased from MTI. A TEM grid with 100-nm-thick c-out-of-plane-oriented gold film was purchased from Electron Microscopy Sciences. Single-crystal quartz (SiO2) wafer (Z cut, 10.0 mm × 10.0 mm × 0.5 mm) was bought from MSE Supplies.

Synthesis and Characterization of ZnO Nanorods

All reagents used in the experiments were of analytical grade and used without any further purification. Zinc nitrate hexahydrate (Zn(NO3)2 6H2O, Sigma-Aldrich, Steinheim, Germany) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH, Merck, Darmstadt, Germany) were used for the ZnO nanorods synthesis. Meanwhile, activated carbon (CAS 7440-44-0, Mw~12.01, Sigma-Aldrich Co., Burlington, MA, USA), polyvinyl alcohol (CAS 9002-89-5 Mowiol, 10–98/Mw~61,000, Sigma-Aldrich Co., Burlington, MA, USA), and glutaric acid (CAS 110-94-1, Mw~132.11, Merck, Burlington, MA, USA) were used to prepare the active material.
Commercial graphite sheets were used as substrate for the electrodes. The electrochemistry and desalination tests were conducted using sodium chloride 0.2 M (NaCl anhydrous, ≥99% purity, Mw~58.44.11, Sigma-Aldrich, Burlington, MA, USA).
