Neutrophil elastase (NE) and proteinase-3 (PR3) concentrations were determined in platelet-free plasma using the Human Polymorphonuclear NE Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) kit (Abcam, Cambridge, UK) and the PR3 Human ELISA kit (HycultBiotech, Uden, Netherlands), respectively. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) concentrations were measured in heparin plasma using the Human MPO ELISA kit (Abcam, Cambridge, UK). All assays were performed according to manufacturer’s instructions. Sample dilutions were adjusted for each assay. Plasma P falciparum histidine-rich protein-2 (PfHRP2), a measure of total parasite biomass, was measured by ELISA as previously described [31 (link)].
