L-132 lung epithelial cells were purchased from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) and EpiSkin™ was purchased from Skin Ethic Laboratories, Lyon, France. The human IL-1α ELISA kit and Bradford assay kit were purchased from Pierce, Rockford, IL, USA. Gantrez® AN-139, a co-polymer of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride (PMVE/MAH, MW 1,080,000 Da) and Gantrez® MS-955, a mixed sodium and calcium salt of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride copolymer (PVM/MA, MW 1,000,000 Da) were gifts from Ashland, Kidderminster, UK. All other chemicals used were of analytical reagent grade.

Copolymer-based Polymer Preparation

Gantrez® AN‐139 (methylvinylether and maleic anhydride copolymer) (Mw = 1.0 × 106 Da) and Gantrez® S‐97 (acid form of methylvinylether and maleic anhydride copolymer) (Mw = 1.2 × 106 Da), were provided by Ashland (Tadworth, Surrey, UK). Poly(ethyleneglycol) (PEG) 10,000 Daltons was obtained from Sigma‐Aldrich (Poole, Dorset, UK).
