Metazachlor (MTZ), chemical purity 99.7%; terbuthylazine (TER), chemical purity 99.4%; and thiacloprid (TCL), chemical purity 99.9%, were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (USA). Chemicals were dissolved in dechlorinated tap water to obtain 20 μg/L, 4 μg/L, and 6 μg/L for MTZ, TER, and TCL, respectively. Actual concentrations of chemicals in water during the experiments were within 96% of the nominal concentrations (Table 2). The analyses of pesticides in water were performed by the State Research Institute in Prague using methods described by Anastassiades et al. (2003 (link)) and Anastassiades et al. (2007 ).

Terbuthylazine (TBA), atrazine (ATZ) (both Pestanal, purity 99.1%) and urea (≥ 95%) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (Seelze, Germany), (NH4)2SO4 from Panreac (Barcelona, Spain) and NaNO3 from Merck (Darmstadt, Germany). The formulated herbicide Terbutilazina-Sapec (concentrate suspension of 0.5 kg active substance L-1; recommended field dose (RD) for weed control in corn plantations of 1.5 L ha-1) was purchased from Sapec—Agro (Setúbal, Portugal).

Pesticide Degradation Using Wood Shavings

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
Terbuthylazine, tebuconazole, and alachlor (PESTANAL® product line) were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich (Taufkirchen, Germany) at a purity higher than 98%. Pesticide stock solutions were prepared in analytical-grade methanol at a concentration of 1000 mg L−1 and stored in the dark at 4 °C.
Wood shavings were used as a bacterial carrier and a source of organic carbon. The wood shavings were obtained from poplar trees growing in the territory of the Slovak Republic. After cutting the trees to shavings, these were sieved at the 1.0–1.5 cm fraction.
Argon gas, at the purity of 99.996%, was obtained from Linde Gas (Prague, Czech Republic).

Atrazine, Atrazine-desethyl (DEA), Atrazine-desisopropyl (DIA), bromacil, carbendazim, chlorpyrifos, diuron, imazalil, linuron, metolachlor, prometryn, simazine, terbumeton, terbumeton-desethyl (TED) , terbuthylazine, terbuthylazine-desethyl (TD), terbutryn, thiabendazole, 3,4-dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA), 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (Madrid, Spain), with a purity higher than 97%. The list of pesticides and TPs available for this study, as well as some physicochemical properties, are listed in Supplementary Material (Table SM1).
HPLC-grade methanol (MeOH), acetone (pesticide residue analysis quality) and formic acid (98-100%, LC-MS grade), were supplied by Scharlau S.L (Barcelona, Spain).
HPLC-grade water (resistivity of 18 MΩ cm) was obtained by purifying demineralised water (Millipore Ltd., Bedford, MA, USA).
Standard stock solutions (500 mg L -1 ) of each compound (except carbendazim) were prepared by dissolving 25 mg (±0.01 mg) of each solid compound in 50 mL of acetone considering the purity of each solid standard. Standard stock solution of carbendazim was prepared in MeOH. Individual stock solutions and working standard solutions were stored at -20 and 4℃ in the dark, respectively.

About PubCompare

Our mission is to provide scientists with the largest repository of trustworthy protocols and intelligent analytical tools, thereby offering them extensive information to design robust protocols aimed at minimizing the risk of failures.

We believe that the most crucial aspect is to grant scientists access to a wide range of reliable sources and new useful tools that surpass human capabilities.

However, we trust in allowing scientists to determine how to construct their own protocols based on this information, as they are the experts in their field.
