All experiments were carried out according to Directive 2010/63/EU and approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee of the Institute of Immunology and Physiology of RAS. Male Wistar rats (aged 10 weeks, m = 250–300 g) were maintained under standard conditions (12 h light/dark cycle with ad libitum access to water and food). Before the heart isolation, the animals were deeply anesthetized with an intramuscular injection of 0.3 mL/kg Zoletil 100® (Virbac, Carros, France) and 1 mL/kg Xylazine 2% (Alfasan, Woerden, Netherlands), heparinized with 5000 IU/kg sodium heparin (Ellara, Russia) to prevent a blood clotting in coronary vessels, and rapidly euthanized by exsanguination. Unless otherwise noted, all chemicals and reagents were purchased from Merck (St Louis, MO, USA).

Approval for this study was obtained from the Lithuanian State Food and Veterinary Service (number 0213, issued 2011.02.12). Thirty-three pigmented rabbits aged 3 to 6 months and weighing 1.3 to 3.2 kg were included in the study. Anesthesia was achieved by an intramuscular injection of ketamine hydrochloride (Bioketan, Vetoquinol) (35 mg∕kg) and xylazine hydrochloride (Xylazine 2%, Alfasan) (5 mg∕kg). After the application of a sterile drape, one drop of topical anesthetic proxymetacaine hydrochloride 5 mg∕ml solution (Alcaine, Alcon) was applied, and the eye was immobilized using a vacuum suction ring. Before ablation, another drop of topical anesthetic was administered. At the end of the surgery, the corneas were flushed with a balanced salt solution (BSS) (Distra-Sol, OphconD.Roesee.K.) and dried with a sterile sponge. Dexamethasone/chloramphenicol ointment (OftanDexa-Chlora, Santen) was applied, and a sterile bandage was placed for several hours. During the postoperative period, dexamethasone/chloramphenicol drops (OftanDexa-Chlora, Santen) were applied four times per day for 5 days.

The number of animals was determined according to our previous studies with considering the values of α=0.05 and β=0.2, and with the help of Minitab software. Assuming a 35% drop, 12 mice in each group were placed (15, 16) (link). Chemicals Myricitrin was purchased from Ava Chem San Antonio, U.S.A (purity 98%), and DG was bought from Merck, Germany. Xylazine2% and Ketamine10% from Alfasan Co. (Netherlands), malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) kits were purchased.
