Behavioral Assessment of Goat Orchiectomy

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
A camera (GoPro HERO5 Black, GoPro Inc., San Mateo, CA, USA) positioned in the left corner of the bay was remotely activated by the researcher, M.W.F., at a minimum distance of 4 m. The animals were filmed for seven minutes without the presence of an observer to use the recordings in another parallel study. The observer then approached the stall and always positioned herself in the same place, activating the filming by remote control for another seven minutes. For filming, the goats were divided into 10 video-recording groups (pens) containing 4 goats each, including 1 or 2 control goats (not submitted to an orchiectomy—without pain). The goats were filmed in four periods: 24 h before the orchiectomy (8:00 am–10:00 am; baseline—M1), between 2 and 2.30 h after the end of the orchiectomy (12:00–2:30 pm; pain—M2), 1 h after the postoperative analgesia (M3) performed with 0.2 mg/kg of morphine (Dimorf 1%, Cristália Produtos Farmacêuticos LTDA, São Paulo, SP, Brazil), and 0.5 mg/kg meloxicam (Maxicam 2%, Ourofino, São Paulo, SP, Brazil) intramuscularly (IM) in all goats, and 24 h after the end of the orchiectomy (M4) (Figure 1).

Video-based Surgical Skill Assessment

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
The LOIHR surgical procedures were video recorded using a head-mounted GoPro Hero 5 Black (GoPro Inc. San Mateo, California), with the following settings: resolution 720p, 60 frames per second; FOV: Narrow; White Balance 4000k; Locked exposure. The video recordings were anonymized and stored. Two trained assessors (TN, FvdG) were blinded for the randomization and reviewed the video recordings independently. Any discrepancies were discussed and reviewed by the 2 assessors and resolved through consensus. The assessment was done according to the principles of OCHRA. 15 (link) As shown in Figure 6, a performed substep could be assessed as "correct," "procedural error" or "executional error." When the substep was not performed, this could be categorized as a "procedural error" if the students skipped this substep, or as "due to time" if it was caused by time constraints. The number of errors was registered for each medical student.

Behavioral Study in Turbid Aquatic Environments

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
The trials were conducted in a white acrylic tank with an opaque divider creating two arenas (each 80.5 x 64 x 40cm (width x length x height) containing 77.2 litres of water at a depth of 15cm) so that two trials could be conducted simultaneously (Fig. 1a). A shelter created from plastic ornamental plants attached to a white corrugated PVC base was placed in each side of the tank to act as a shelter in experiment two (Fig. 1c). Turbidity was recorded with a calibrated Thermo Scientific™ Orion™ AQUAfast AQ3010 turbidity meter using Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU). The tank was lit from above with a fluorescent strip light and recorded from above with a GoPro Hero 5 Black (GoPro, Inc.) at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The tank was filled with water from the recirculation system used to house the fish. A white curtain was drawn across the tank area to prevent disturbance.

Movies of leaflet movements were acquired with a video camera (HERO5 BLACK, GoPro) or the aforementioned imaging systems, and the leaflet angle changes were estimated using NIS-Elements imaging software. Photographs of various tissues were collected by a stereomicroscope (Leica S9D, Leica Microsystems) equipped with a camera (Leica MC190 HD, Leica Microsystems) and processed using microscope software (Leica Application Suite, Leica Microsystems). The images acquired using a Leica S9D microscope (Supplementary Fig. 10d–f) were corrected by non-linear adjustment (gamma value = 0.60).

Egocentric Camera Monitoring of Daily Activities

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
A detailed description of the acquisition protocol is described in Tsai et al.35 Briefly, participants agreed to record their normal daily routine at home using a head-mounted camera (GoPro® Hero5 Black). Specifically, they were asked to record three videos of approximately 1.5 h each, over a two-week period, that would include them performing ADLs or iADLs that involved the use of hands. The content of the recordings was chosen collaboratively between the participants and researchers.35 Participants were also trained to use a tablet (ASUS® ZenPad™ 8″ 16GB) with pre-installed GoPro® application, which allowed them to start and stop the recordings at any time, make sure their hands were visible, and review and edit the recordings before returning the equipment. Examples of activities collected in this study included: feeding, brushing teeth, washing hands, doing the laundry, cleaning, and preparing meals.
Upon returning the equipment, participants were interviewed using a survey and semi-structured questions. The interview outline was designed to explore participants’ opinions about privacy considerations and concerns surrounding the use of wearable cameras in the home, the perceptions of usefulness of this approach, and usability aspects related to wearing an egocentric camera during ADLs and iADLs.

3D Motion Capture Using DLT and DMS

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
Three cameras were used for data acquisition (GoPro Hero 5 Black), 2 for the DLT method and one for the DMS method. The DLT cameras were positioned orthogonally from one another forming a 45° from the center of the working area at a distance of 220 cm from the center point. The camera used for the DMS method was placed at a distance of 272 cm and frontal to the center of the working area (Fig 1). In order to compare the same movement for DLT and DMS, all three cameras were synchronized by using GoPro Smart Remote control. Video acquisition was set for resolution of 1080p at 120 frames per second for the DLT and DMS cameras. Other settings included: Field of view-Narrow, Color-flat, WB-3000K, ISO-1200, EV Compensation- -0.5.

Endotracheal Tube Intubation Technique Evaluation

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
The primary outcome was the rate of successful placement of the endotracheal tube. The secondary outcomes were the time to intubation, quality of glottic view, and ease of intubation. Intubations were “successful” if the endotracheal tube was correctly placed within the manikin’s trachea, as confirmed by chest rise by a researcher. Intubations failed if the endotracheal tube was placed within the esophagus or intubation attempts lasted longer than 60 s. Time to intubation was defined as the time from insertion of the blade between the teeth until the first effective manual ventilation of the manikin’s lungs, as confirmed by one of the researchers. All intubation attempts were recorded with the sport camera HERO5 Black (GoPro GmbH, Munich, Germany), and time to intubation was analyzed afterwards.
Glottic view was evaluated by the paramedics by using the Cormack and Lehane classification system. At the end of each airway scenario, the paramedics were asked to rate ease of intubation using both airway techniques on a standard 10-point visual analog scale (VAS) ranging from 0 (very difficult) to 10 (very easy).

Egocentric Video Recording of ADLs in Cervical SCI

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
The dataset used in the study was collected in a previous study; its specifics are discussed in further depth in Bandini et al.18 (link)
The criteria for inclusion were: older than 18 years of age; grade A to D American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS); neurological level of injury between C3 and C8; impaired but not completely absent hand function. Exclusion criteria included the presence of another neuromusculoskeletal disease affecting the movement of the upper limb, upper limb joint deformity, and pain during the movement of the upper limbs. The participants were asked to record egocentric video using a head-mounted camera with a frame rate of 30 fps (Hero 5 Black, GoPro, San Mateo, USA). Participants recorded themselves performing naturalistic ADLs or instrumental ADLs over three 1.5-hour sessions over the course of 2 weeks in their own homes. A schedule for recording the daily activities was collaboratively developed between the investigators and participants, to ensure that the recordings were reflective of their real routines of ADLs while providing meaningful information for hand function analysis. More information about the data collection protocol can be found in Tsai et al.27
The study was approved by the Research Ethics Board of the University Health Network (18-5225).
