Polyethersulfone (PES) microfiltration membranes (0.45 μm pore diameter, 47 mm diameter) were purchased from MilliporeSigma (Burlington, USA). Glycidyl methacrylate (≥97.0%), lanthanum(III) nitrate hexahydrate (99.999% trace metal basis), cerium(III) chloride heptahydrate (99.9% trace metal basis), neodymium(III) nitrate hexahydrate (99.9% trace metal basis), zinc perchlorate hexahydrate, calcium chloride (anhydrous, Redi-Dri, ≥97%), sodium standard for ICP (1,000 mg/L ± 2 mg/L), calcium standard for ICP (1,000 mg/L ± 2 mg/L), and magnesium standard for ICP (1,000 mg/L ± 2 mg/L) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. Magnesium chloride hexahydrate (99–102%, ACS grade) was purchased from VWR Life Science. L-lysine (98%, powder) was purchased from Alfa Aesar. Ethyl alcohol (absolute, 200 proof, ≥99.5%, ACS Reagent grade) was purchased from Acros Organics. Denatured Ethyl alcohol (88–91%), sodium chloride (≥99%, certified ACS grade, crystalline), nitric acid (68–70%, certified ACS plus grade), and hydrochloric acid (36.5–38%, certified ACS plus grade) were purchased from Fisher Chemical. Arsenazo (III) was purchased from Pointe Scientific. Sodium hydroxide (10 N, biotech reagent grade) was purchased from Avantor. Deionized water (DI water) was made from a RiOS-DI 3 water purification system (MilliporeSigma, Burlington, MA, USA).

Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Synthesis

Two PCs were purchased:
PDADMAC (Mw = <100 kDa, 20 wt % in
water) from Sigma-Aldrich (The Netherlands) and PAH (Mw = 150 kDa) purchased from TCI chemicals (Belgium). As
PA poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS, Mw = 500–700 kDa, 20.4 wt % in water) from Tosoh Organic Chemical
Co. LTD (Japan) was used. NaOH, NaI, D2O, DMSO, DMF, and
THF were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich (The Netherlands). NMP was supplied
by VIVoChem (The Netherlands).
Potassium chloride (KCl, Mw = 74.55 g/mol), magnesium sulfate heptahydrate
(MgSO4·7H2O, Mw = 246.47 g/mol), magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2·6H2O, Mw = 203.30 g/mol),
and ethanol absolute (>99.9% purity) were obtained from VWR Chemicals
(Belgium). Sodium sulfate decahydrate (Na2SO4·10H2O, Mw = 322.20 g/mol)
was obtained from Acros Organics (Belgium). Sodium chloride (NaCl, Mw = 58.44 g/mol) was obtained from Nouryon (SanalP,
pharmaceutical grade) (The Netherlands). Polyethylene glycols (PEGs)
with different molecular weights (Mw =
200, 400, 600, 1500, and 4000 g/mol) were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich
(The Netherlands). All chemicals were used as supplied.

from Alfa Aesar (Germany). PEG 200 was obtained from Fluka (Germany).
Hydrophilized poly(ether sulfone) (PES) ultrafiltration membranes
with a molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) of 30 kDa were obtained from
Microdyn-Nadir (UH 030, Germany) and were used as support membrane.
According to the specifications and a previously reported study,31 (link) the PES ultrafiltration support membranes are
stable in solutions with pH ranging from 0 to 14.

Bacterial Mutagenicity Assay Reagents

All chemicals used in this study were of analytical grade. The NADP and glucose-6-phosphate used were obtained from Roche Biochem (Stockholm, Sweden). Aroclor-induced S9 from rat liver was purchased from Trinova Biochem (Giessen, Germany). Histidine, potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate, potassium phosphate dibasic anhydrous and sodium ammonium phosphate were purchased from Merck AG (Darmstadt, Germany). Magnesium chloride hexahydrate and citric acid monohydrate were acquired from VWR international (Leuven, Belgium). Biotin, tryptophan, methylcellulose (MC), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), benzo[a]pyrene, 2-aminoanthracene, sodium azide, estradiol, bisphenol A, progesterone and testosterone were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (Steinheim, Germany). D-Luciferin was obtained from Biotherma (Handen, Sweden). Yeast nitrogen base medium without amino acids was obtained from Becton Dickinson (Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA).

Antioxidant and Cholinesterase Inhibition Assays

Methanol Chromasolv for HPLC was from Riedel-de Haën (Seelze, Germany), and formic acid was from Carlo Erba (Val de Reuil, France). The standards used for HPLC analyses were acquired from Sigma-Aldrich (4-O-caffeoylquinic acid, quercetin-3-O-rutinoside hydrate, protocatechuic acid, ferulic acid, and p-coumaric acid), Fluka (caffeic acid), Alfa Aesar (5-O-caffeoylquinic acid), and Extrasynthèse (Genay, France): 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid, apigenin-8-C-glucoside, apigenin-6-C-glucoside, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, kaempferol-3-O-glucoside, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, and tiliroside. Ultrapure water (with resistivities of 18.2 MΩ/cm) was obtained using a Milli-Q water purification system from Millipore (Molsheim, France). Standard solutions of Pb and Cd, Atomic Absorption standard with 4% HNO3, were purchased from SPC Science (Quebec, Canada). Suprapur nitric acid 65% (v/v) and NH4H2PO4 (Suprapur) were from Merck (Darmstad, Germany).

from Alfa Aesar (Germany). 1,1,1-Tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane (TPE,
>98.0%) was acquired from TCI (Belgium). PEG 200 was obtained from
Fluka (Germany).
Milli-Q water was used to prepare all aqueous
solutions. All chemicals
were used as received.
Hydrophilized polyethersulfone (PES)
ultrafiltration (UF) membranes
with a MWCO of 30 kDa were purchased from Microdyn-Nadir (UH030, Germany)
and used as the support. According to the supplier and earlier research,
these supports are stable in the pH range 0–14.11 (link)

Antibacterial Cellulose Paper Testing

Norfloxacin, 95%, was purchased from abcr GmbH (Karlsruhe, Germany). Commercially available, cellulose-based paper (Soft & Sicher, dm-drogerie markt GmbH + Co. Liposome Preparation and Characterization

Electrolyte Preparation for TRPV1 Channel Excitation

Sodium chloride (VWR, Radnor, PA); potassium chloride (Macron Chemicals, Phillipsburg, NJ); magnesium chloride hexahydrate (J. T. Baker, Phillipsburg, NJ); calcium chloride dihydrate (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO); ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) (Sigma-Aldrich); ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)-N, N, N′, N′-tetraacetic acid (EGTA) (Sigma-Aldrich) and 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid) (HEPES) (Sigma-Aldrich) were used to prepare the electrolyte solutions. Capsaicin (purity > 95%, Cayman Chemical, Ann Arbor, MI) was dissolved in ethanol and stored at −20°C prior to use. On the day of experiment, the ethanol solvent was removed and the Capsaicin was dissolved in aqueous recording buffers, and used for TRPV1 channel excitations. All chemicals were used as received without further purification. Hydrochloric acid (EMD Millipore, Billerica, MA) and aqueous solutions of potassium hydroxide (Mallinckrodt, St. Louis, MO) and sodium hydroxide (EMD Millipore) were used for buffer pH adjustment. All aqueous solutions were prepared with deionized water (resistivity = 18 MΩ · cm at 25°C, EMD Millipore) and were filtered with 0.22 μm PVDF filter membranes (EMD Millipore) prior to use.
