Quercetin and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhidrazil (DPPH) were purchased from Alfa Aesar (Massachusetts, USA) and methanol was obtained from Merck (Darmstandt, Germany). Hydrolyzed starch for diastase determination was purchased from Carlo Erba (Barcelona, Spain). The calibration of the HANNA Honey Color C221 colorimeter was with glycerin was provided by Glycerol HANNA instruments (Woonsocket, Rhode Island, USA). Standards of glucose, fructose, sucrose, maltose, trehalose, turanose and melezitose were obtained from Sigma–Aldrich (Madrid, Spain).

Protein purification and analysis protocol

Malonic acid (99% purity), anhydrous sodium carbonate and potassium iodide at commercial grade were purchased from Panreac (Barcelona, Spain). Trichloroisocyanuric acid (95% purity) was purchased from TCI Chemicals (Zwijndrecht, Belgium). Food-grade cellulose was obtained from ESSECO (San Martino di Trecate, Italy). Sodium hydroxide (97% purity), sodium phosphate monobasic (99% purity), sodium citrate, Cyt C, Lys, α-LA and BSA were purchased from Sigma Aldrich (Darmstadt, Germany). Antioxidant Extraction from Guara Almond Skins

Water (ultrapure grade) and ethanol (HPLC grade) were acquired from Merck (Madrid, Spain). Hexanal (98%), p-anisidine reagent (99%), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), sodium chloride, methanol (HPLC grade) and n-hexane (96%, GC grade) were supplied by Sigma-Aldrich (Madrid, Spain). Petroleum ether, sodium methylate, sulphuric acid (98%), acetic acid, potassium iodide, sodium thiosulfate (0.1 M), chloroform, isooctane were of analytical or chromatographic grade and were purchased from Panreac (Barcelona, Spain). Standard compounds such as linoleic (C18:2), oleic (C18:1), palmitic (C16:0), palmitoleic (C16:1), stearic (C18:0) and tridecanoic (C13) acid methyl esters; and 4-methyl-2-pentanone were acquired from Sigma-Aldrich (Madrid, Spain) in the purest available form. A commercial poly(ε-caprolactone) PCL-CAPA 6800 (Mn = 80,000, density = 1.1 g cm−3) was supplied in pellets by Perstorp Holding AB (Sweden). Guara almond skins (AS) were kindly supplied by Almendras Llopis (Alicante, Spain).

Synthesis of Thermoresponsive Polymers

The monomers, 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate (MEO2MA, Aldrich 95%) was purified by passing through a neutral alumina column; N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) was purified by recrystallization, from a hexane/toluene mixture (90/10 vol. %); Styrene (St, Merck > 99%) and methyl methacrylate (MMA, Merck > 99%) were used as received. For the synthesis of 2-(2-(2-(acetylthio)ethoxy)ethoxyl)ethyl methacrylate (AcSEO2MA), 2-(2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethoxy)ethan-1-ol (96%, Aldrich), methacryloyl chloride (97%, Aldrich), triethylamine (99%, Scharlau), dichlorometane (DCM) (99%, Aldrich), anhydrous sodium sulfate (99%, Qemical), potassium iodide (99.5%, Panreac), potassium thioacetate (98%, Aldrich) and acetonitrile (99.9%, Scharlau) were employed as received. All chemical reagents: ammonium persulfate (APS) (>98%, Fluka); tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) (>90%, Fluka); sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) (Fluka); tetrachloroauric (III) acid (HAuCl4·3H2O) (≥99.9%, Aldrich) and trisodium citrate dihydrate (Sigma-Aldrich)] were used as received. Milli-Q water was used in all experiments. Solvents were dried by standard methods or by elution through a Pure Solv Innovative Technology column drying system.
