For this assay, a total of 40 worms were analyzed per experiment. Three independent experiments were performed (n = 120).

Fluorescence spectrophotometry was carried out using a Varian Cary Eclipse fluorescence spectrophotometer. Microsomes from insect cells containing recombinant human MAO-A and MAO-B (5 mg protein/mL) and kynuramine dihydrobromide were obtained from Sigma. (±)-Kavain (> 95 %), (+)-7,8-dihydrokavain (> 98 %), (+)-methysticin (> 98 %), (+)-7,8-dihydromethysticin (> 90 %), yangonin (> 95 %), desmethoxyyangonin (> 95 %), and curcumin (> 98 %) were purchased from Sigma. (+)-Kavain (98 %) was obtained from Carbosynth.
