Synthesis and Characterization of Functional Materials

The following chemicals were used as received: sodium dodecyl sulphate (≥99%), Sudan Red 7B (95%), 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (80%), 1,4-butanediol diacrylate (90%), trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate (Mn = 428 g mol−1), 1,2-dichlorobenzene (99%), Zonyl FS-300 (40% solids), methoxyperfluorobutane (99%), mineral oil (light), iron(II) chloride tetrahydrate (99.99%), 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9-hexadecafluorodecane-1,10-diol (97%), methacrylic acid (99%) and octadecane (99%) (Sigma-Aldrich); silicone oil (for oil baths −40 to +200 °C), perfluorohexanes (98%), hexanes (98%), and iron(III) chloride (98%) (Alfa Aesar); ethyl nonafluorobutyl ether (>98%) and sodium oleate (>97%) (TCI); Darocur 1173 (Ciba); fluorinated acrylate oligomer (Sartomer); Nile Red (99%) (Acros); N-dodecylpropane-1,3-diamine (>95%) (Matrix). Light-responsive surfactant was made by the literature procedure26 ,32 . Fluorinated coumarin dye was made by the literature procedure31 (link). Cleavable surfactant sodium 2,2-bis(hexyloxy)propyl sulphate was made by the literature procedure28 (link).

Synthesis of Fluorinated Nanoparticles

Dopamine hydrochloride (DA, 99%) and perfluorohexanes (PFH) was purchased from Alfa Aesar. Ammonium hydroxide (NH3∙H2O, 28%−30%) was purchased from VWR International. 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecanethiol (97%) was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. Perfluoropentane (PFP) was purchased from Strem Chemicals. Iron(III) chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3∙6H2O, 98%) and ethanol (100%) was obtained from Fisher Scientific. Perfluorobutane (PFB) was purchased from SynQuest Labs. All chemicals were used without further purifications. Deionized water is used in all the experiments.

Fabrication of Microfluidic Devices

SU-8 2002 and SU-8 2050 photoresists were
purchased from Microchem Corp. (Massachusetts, U.S.A.). 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane
was purchased from ABCR-Chemicals (Karlsruhe, Germany). PDMS and curing
agent (Sylgard 184) were obtained from Dow Corning (Michigan, U.S.A.).
Perfluorohexane, 95+% and 99% (used for the ICPMS tests), were purchased
from Alfa Aesar (Karlsruhe, Germany) and Sigma-Aldrich (Missouri,
U.S.A.), respectively. Merck IV multielement standard solution was
purchased from Merck Millipore (Massachusetts, U.S.A.). The test solutions
were prepared from single-element standard solutions (Inorganic Ventures,
Virginia, U.S.A.) and contained nitrate salts of either Ce or Na,
Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Mo (referred as multielement solution) at concentrations
of 1 mg kg–1. Merck IV and the test solutions were
diluted to the required concentrations with 2% sub-boiled HNO3 prepared in ultrahigh-purity water (Merck Millipore, Massachusetts,
U.S.A.).

Synthesis of Perfluorinated Polymer Nanoparticles

D,L-lactide was purchased from Polysciences (Germany) and perfluorohexane (purity>98%) was acquired from Alfa Aesar (Germany). 1-hexanol from Acros Organics (Belgium), 2,2,3,3,4,4-heptafluoro-1-butanol, 1H,1H perfluoro-1-heptanol, 1H,1H perfluoro-1-nonanol, 1H,1H perfluoro-1-dodecanol and 1H,1H perfluoro-1-tetradecanol were acquired from Fluorochem (United Kingdom). Acetone, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dichloromethane were purchased from Carlo Erba Reactifs (France), chloroform and diethyl ether from VWR (France). Stannous octoate, dry toluene, D 2 O, sodium cholate, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA, 30-70kDa, 87-90% hydrolyzed) were provided by Sigma-Aldrich (France). Deuterated solvents (CDCl3 and acetone-d) were purchased from Eurisotop (France), Cell culture reagents such as DMEM (Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium), RPMI 1640 (Roswell Park Memorial Institute medium), FBS (Fetal Bovine Serum), trypsin-EDTA solution and PBS (Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ free phosphate buffer) were purchased from Sigma Aldrich (France). The ultrapure water was produced by a Millipore Synergy 185 apparatus coupled with a RiOs5 TM (Millipore, France) with a resistivity of 18.2 MΩ.cm. The NMR sample tubes and coaxial inserts were obtained from CortecNet (France).
