The matrix N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (NEDC), 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB), and derivatization agent for amino acid imaging 2,4-diphenyl-pyranylium tetrafluoroborate (DPP-TFB) were purchased from Merck. Triethylamine (TEA) for part of the DPP-TFB buffer was obtained from Wako.

Synthesis of 4EPX-DDSQ Epoxy Compounds

DDSQ containing four epoxy groups (4EPX-DDSQ) were kindly donated by JNC Corp. Toluene, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and acetonitrile were purchased respectively from Nacalai Tesque Inc. Anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (THF), RuCl3·3H2O, 4′-chloro-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine and 2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine compounds were purchased from Aldrich Chemical Co. Inc. and used as received.

Hydrogel Synthesis and Cell Culture

The BALB/3T3 clone A31, a fibroblast cell line established from mouse embryos, was obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (Manassas, VA, USA). BALB/c mice were obtained from Sankyo Labo Service (Tokyo, Japan).

Plasma and Urine Collection from Mice

Urine was also collected directly from each mouse with a 1.5-mL sample tube.
