Significance was accepted at P < 0•05.
The data obtained of the semi-quantitative immunohistochemical staining were comparatively analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Multiple comparisons were made through the decomposition of the interaction by applying Tukey's test. The level of significance was set to 5 % (P < 0•05) on all tests. Results were expressed as means with their standard errors. All statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 17.1 for Windows (SPSS). ). However, efficiency did not differ among diets (0•26 a (SEM 0•01), 0•29 a (SEM 0•02) and 0•28 a (SEM 0•01) BWG/g diet for C, EWS and ERS, respectively (P = 0•2247)). Similar results were observed in the previous study using the same model of growing rats fed extruded WG maize (34) .
