Environmental Enrichment Effects on Wistar Rats

Male Wistar WU rats (n = 84; Charles River, Sulzfeld, Germany; 9 weeks of age) were housed individually in Macrolon type IV cages with sawdust bedding under a reversed 12 h light/dark cycle (lights off at 07:00 h) under controlled conditions (temperature 21 ± 2°C, relative humidity 60 ± 15%). Paper tissues and a shelter were provided as cage enrichment. Food and water were available ad libitum, except during testing (see below). A radio provided background noise. Behavioral testing started at least 1 h after dark onset. All experiments were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Utrecht University and were conducted in agreement with Dutch laws (Wet op de Dierproeven, 1996 ) and European regulations (Guideline 86/609/EEC).

Wistar Rat Accommodation and Ethics

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
Male Wistar WU rats (Charles River, Germany) were used for all experiments. Before the start of experimental procedures rats were given at least one week time for accommodation to the animal facility with standard chow and water available ad libitum. Experimental protocols were approved by the Animal Experiments Ethical Committees of the Leiden University Medical Center and/or the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the study was performed in accordance with Dutch laws.

Wistar Rat Husbandry and Welfare

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
Male Wistar WU rats (240-260 g at arrival, n = 60) were obtained from Charles River Laboratories (Sulzfeld, Germany). The animals were housed 2-3 animals per cage in Macrolon Type 4 cages for at least one week to acclimate to the conditions in the facility. A 12 h light cycle (7 AM-7 PM) was employed and temperature was kept between 19-22 °C with a relative humidity of 55-65%. Standard rodent chow (Teklad Global Diet, Harlan, Horst, The Netherlands) and acidified water were available ad libitum. All experiments were in agreement with EU Directive 2010/63/EU for animal experiments and approved by the Ethical Committee on Animal Experimentation of TNO and USAMRMC Animal Care and Use Review Office (ACURO).

About PubCompare

Our mission is to provide scientists with the largest repository of trustworthy protocols and intelligent analytical tools, thereby offering them extensive information to design robust protocols aimed at minimizing the risk of failures.

We believe that the most crucial aspect is to grant scientists access to a wide range of reliable sources and new useful tools that surpass human capabilities.

However, we trust in allowing scientists to determine how to construct their own protocols based on this information, as they are the experts in their field.
