Functionalized Hybrid Nanoparticle Synthesis

Solvents were purchased from VWR and Alfa Aesar, and used as received if not stated otherwise. Anti-LAMP1 rabbit primary antibody and goat anti-rabbit secondary antibody IgG H&L (Alexa Fluor® 488) were purchased from Abcam. DAPI was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich.

Synthesis of α-Fe2O3 Nanoparticles

Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) type 1 and fly ash were provided by cement plant (SCG Cement Co., Ltd., Saraburi, Thailand). Commercial α-Fe2O3 came from a vendor for cement factory and its properties were analyzed by XRD and SEM. The synthesized α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were prepared by surfactant-assisted method as described previously [23 (link)]. Iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate (FeSO4·7H2O, 99%) from Quality Reagent Chemical (QREC, Auckland, New Zealand) served as the precursor for the nanoparticle synthesis. Ammonium hydroxide solution (NH4OH, 30 wt%) in water was purchased from Sigma–Aldrich (Sigma-Aldrich In., Saint Louis, MO, USA). Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was obtained from Ajax Finechem (Ajex finechem Inc., Taren Point, Australia). Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) provided from Amresco (Amresco Inc., Solon, OH, USA). Polyoxyethlyene tert-octylphenyl ether (TX100) was supplied from Applichem Panreac (Applichem Gmbh Inc., Darmstadt, Germany). All chemicals for α-Fe2O3 synthesis were used as-received.

Synthesis and Characterization of Hylin a1 Peptides

Hylin a1 and RGD-hylin a1 were synthesized by Ango Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (Shanghai, China). Dimethyl Sulphoxide (DMSO) and Triton-100 were of analytical grade and were used without further purification. Poly acrylic acid (PAA, average molecular weight 240,000, 25 wt % solution in water) was from Alfa Aesar. NaCl, Na2HPO4.2H2O, KH2PO4, and KCl were all of analytical grade. The 10 mM phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solutions (pH = 7.4) contained 0.01 M sodium phosphate, 0.137 M NaCl, 0.01 M Na2HPO4.2H2O, 0.002 M KH2PO4 and 0.0027 M KCl. Ultrapure water in the experiment was provided by Milli-Q Academic system (USA).
